I got no issues with anyone having the #7, I do't really care who has it.

Really looking forward to all of our transfers but especially our two Texas Tech transfers. Those boys are going to ball out.

I'm just hoping that it sparks something in our current WRs. Drake, Sullivan, and the 2017 WRs. The young 2018 guys will be fine IMO. Let's open up this damn offense. Nothing to lose here. If we don't open things up then we simply will never get any better. Our coaches have to show confidence in this offense.

This means nothing if Giles somehow scores like 14 TDs and has over 1000 yards receiving this year.

He will help the WR core as well, being a veteran guy and knowing how to run routes. He can start a new trend with LSU WRs and possibly QBs as well. If he can do these things then he would most certainly have earned that jersey. He will give us a short threat that we have been lacking for sometime. We have plenty of guys who can go deep or be a RZ threat but this guy will expand the field for a defense and is exactly what we need.

Save the whole #7 isn't a thing argument, its undeniable these dudes were our biggest impact players and wore the jersey back-to-back:
Patrick Peterson
Tyrann Matheiu
Leonard Fournette
DJ Chark

Two of those 4 got the number before they ever played a down for LSU. Fournette wanted #7 more to rep the 7th ward than to carry on any tradition with the #7, as I recall.

Actually both of those things are deniable or at the very least debatable.

Between Matheiu and Fournette, there were 2 years of no one wearing the number, that isn't really back to back. I would also argue that Guice was our biggest impact player when Chark wore #7, followed by Williams.

For what its worth, I think Giles will be stud next year,

As do I

and will carry on the savageness of #7,

Hopefully more so than Chark, but Chark's numbers in our offense with Ettling at QB (I thought Dnny was a decent QB but he wasn't gonna light up the world with his passing) were very good.

but I totally understand why it doesn't sit well with people.

I don't understand why folks get that worked up over 7, as I said, Peterson and Fournette were both freshmen when they got the number. So clearly, even if you want to create some #7 tradition, there is precedent for a player who excelled prior to arriving at LSU.

Whether folks want to acknowledge it or not, but this is just another chapter in the "He talks like us" / "He doesn't talk like us" debate.
From my point of view, we want the very best coaches and players, no matter where they are from or who they talk like. we should guard against being too insular and giving in to our local prejudices if we want Nattys.

So Giles gets to wear the number that represents the number of times Alabama has beaten us in a row?

It’s not really an official thing. The players have just handed down the number. PP7 gave the number to TM7 who gave the number to LF7 who I guess gave it to Chark. (Was never reported) Chark must have given it to Giles.

The fans, coaches, and managers have nothing to do with this pseudo tradition.

I'll never understand why anyone cares what number a player wears. Mind boggling.

Has previously gone to a stud player. Now, if a new guy is the best, it is disappointing due to lack of recruited talent.
