Really, how about Coach K, he can buy players year after year and no one in the media will mess with him. Only praise for Coach K. Just ask Dick V.

Anyone who legitimately wants Kim Mulkey is a moron and likely a cuck

Texas Tech guy, Beard. Unfortunately, he and other good candidates will be gone by the time we know if we need a coach. Arkansas is after him right now.

The first questions that would have to be answered are "who would realistically take this job?" and "how much would LSU be willing to pay?"
1. LSU's not going to be in a position to go out and steal a top coach from someone else (Beard, Sampson, etc.). Those guys are paid well and have their programs humming. They aren't going to sign up for a potential rebuild.
2. This administration hasn't exactly been "aggressive" when it comes to coaching searches and pay. Jimbo money scared them off. They had no desire to get into a bidding war for Herman. Jones was hired on the cheap. Even Wade was a bit of a "cheap" hire (young mid-major HC vs. going after established major conf. HC). Point being, LSU isn't spending big if they have to make a new hire.
This means the pool is relatively small. Particularly if a new coach thinks he MIGHT have to deal with sanctions from the old regime.
With that, my two top choices might be:
1. Steve Forbes - ETSU
Forbes isn't "young" (55), but he's done a good job in a very good mid major conference (SoCon). He has an animated personality and is an intense dude on the sideline. Most of all, he's been a good recruiter (asst. at A&M in the mid-2000's; asst. under Pearl at Tenn.; asst. at Wichita St. under Marshall). He knows this region well from a recruiting aspect. The rub is that some might consider him to be a little "aggressive" on the recruiting side. LSU's apparently believes all recruiting is squeaky clean, so Forbes may not fit the bill.
2. Wes Miller - UNCG.
We got to see him this year when his UNCG team came in an nearly beat LSU early in the season. Many think he is the "next Wade". Young guy (36) who has had great success in the tough SoCon. Eventually he is going to make a jump to a major conf. school. Would LSU be that jump? Or, would he hold out waiting for a better situation than what LSU finds themselves in now. LSU's administration isn't an attractive group to work for right now and Miller will have options. LSU wouldn't be his only chance

Why not Mulkey?? She can recruit, motivate and is an excellent game day coach.

Trent Johnson or Johnny Jones. I want someone who will tank the system even worse, to get Alleva canned.

You don't like McMahon? I think he's solid.
