The object of football is to outscore your opponent by as wide a margin as possible - so, the 2019 team is one of the best in LSU history.

1969 Tigers had the largest LSU avg. scoring margin (25.8). 2011 had the second largest margin (24.4). The 2019 Tigers are at 24.0

The 2019 Tigers will likely break the 2011 mark against Arkansas and A&M. The 2019 team will take the all-time LSU average scoring margin lead with a 45 point win over Arkansas.

Went through all seasons back to 1919.

Maybe time to rethink defense expectations somewhat in the era of high-powered Spread offenses?

[Props to Fast Times @ LSU for digging into this subject.]

I mean I get The concern, but I kinda Agree

This defense isn’t elite but it’s not terrible.
It kinda end up Playing just well enough.

Yeah. The defense has been good enough to get enough stops and turnovers for us to win comfortably in most of our games.

The only one score games were Texas, Auburn, and Bama. And in all three of those the other team got a score very late that made the game seem closer than it actually was.

Juts like we used to say back when we did have the elite defense... Give us an average offense and we can win it all.

This year, the defense is at least average (arguably better than average based on actual stats, but can't say that around here ), and the offense is obviously elite. We're right where we need to be.

Just win, baby!

And if you are winning near all-time scoring margins, then it ain't all bad!

I would like to understand the number of possessions the 1969 and 2011 defenses had per game versus 2019. I bet the 2019 defense has broken the LSU record for the number of defensive possessions played per game.

A 58-37 game is exactly the same as a 35-14 game.

if LSU covers the spread against Arkansas (44 points), the 2019 Tigers will have the widest average margin of victory in the history of LSU football - just a fraction more than the 1969 team... 25.82 point scoring margin

pretty meaningless stat considering we've played 4 games where the other team is only slightly better than a good high school team.
Our defense has had bad games. Why some of you try to down play it is silly.
Its the same as the people that refused to see how terrible our offense became in 2011 down the stretch of games, culminating in a epic beatdown in the championship game. We played terrible against Arky in the first half, and didn't even have a first down in teh first half against UGA in the SECCG, but let's ignore it and look at something positive.

Are there any teams that play FEWER cupcakes than the 2019 LSU teams?

C'mon man

I think LSU beats the spread, but I wouldn't bet a spread that big - either way.

The point was, who cares what a bloated scoring margin record is. We play a couple of games against the sisters of the poor. Bragging about a 24 point margin when all of the good teams you played were single score games, except the UF 14 point win, doesn't really mean anything.
it's a meaningless stat that has been propped up against lesser competition, something every good team does.

2011 team beat the Pac12 champ Oregon by 13 (lowest margin of the year outside of Bama games), Big East champ West Virginia by 26, ranked UF by 30, ranked Auburn by 35, ranked Arkansas by 24, and SEC east champ UGA by 32.

Yeah. This isn't the 2011 offense, so we don't need the 2011 defense.

I don’t believe we are beating Arkie by 44 points.

Yeah. That's YOUR point.

My point is that the sky is not falling when the LSU defense is at or near the all-time average scoring margin.

And ALL teams have cupcakes in their yearly data. You can take that all the way back to the 1860's.

This defense can improve, but it IS NOT the dumpster fire that a few Sky Screamers want to pretend it is.
