Coaches should coach and head coaches should manage and make decisions. These days, the game is too complex for a head coach to have enough time to devote to gameplanning and playcalling, while still doing all the extra crap that being a head coach requires.
For whatever reason, however, Miles believes that game planning/play selection is his responsibility. Maybe it's a Schembechler thing.
Anyone know how many playcalling head coaches (Spurrier, Leach, etc.) are out there right now in comparison to the game manager type head coach?

Brush up on Finger Math. He would have to use more than one hand to count first downs on his fingers more often.
It would free him up to keep track of the time clock and how many timeouts we have left.

I don't think we need to speak in absolutes. I think Sean Payton does a good job in doing both. I think it can be done. I actually like a CEO formula though. Especially in a situation where the Head guy struggles with that a bit. Les freeing himself up to identify a timeout situation at the end of the game without letting 28 seconds elapse is a good thing in my opinion.

Game planning. Overall offensive philosophy. But let someone come in and call the plays and set up the offense that les wants.
Les can make the call to go for it in 4th but let the OC call what the play is.

It wouldn't matter if we got a new OC and Les didn't tinker with anything. If we lost the idiots would say the same thing, it's all Les Miles' fault.
The truth is no one here knows to what extent he involves himself in the offense/defense, and what calls he's responsible for making and which ones he's not.

Sounds better 10-3

Let's see, different OCs....
same results....
What could be the common denominator?

I concur...And if he's highly involved in the offense, than he needs to not be..If he's not that involved in the offense than he needs a new OC...Either way something has got to change.

Particularly on game-day? Does he just sit there and count timeouts in his head while eating grass and digging in his ears and nose?
He has already handed over the keys of the defense to Chavis, so maybe he wants to keep control of the offense to justify his being on the sidelines?
I'm trying to figure out his rationality for always tinkering with one side of the football.
do you think Les would be the only coach in history that lets his coordinators do the heavy lifting?

what a stupid gif. the guy obviously reaches in with his right hand but then slaps "himself" with his left. you're so dumb.

Huge difference in NFL vs College in this regard. Plenty of NFL head coaches are playcallers. In college, most are giving it up to the OC.

He recruits, he motivates, he oversees, he makes the final hiring and firing decisions, he disciplines players, he deals with the Athletic Department and Administration, he tours and fund raises for the TAF and he coordinates the coordinators. He makes the final decisions. He is the head ball coach.

He can still override calls, but let the OC call the game for the most part. He isn't going to bring in someone that doesn't share his philosophy, so it will be someone that runs his style. All he should do game day is worry about what calls are going in and to decide whether to override it or not. Should only be where the game is on the line in my opinion.

Same as what a normal HC is.
There's a reason why nearly every school has an OC and a DC.

recruit and decide to go for it on 4th down or not.

Les needs to just be the new Bobby Bowden. Recruit and motivate.
