If I hadn’t watched the game and just looked at the stats.

I say we win by 2 scores until you get to 4th down conversions. It’s been a minute since I’ve seen a team meltdown like that. He doesn’t go for it when he should (UK) and does when he shouldn’t (Bama). Lane had another Tin Cup moment yesterday.

This is perfectly described.

The fact that we look like one of the best teams in the country based on stats/metrics alone and yet are 6-3 is a scathing indictment of the coaching staff.

Close games almost always come down to a few critical moments, plays, decisions. LSU simply hasn't been good in those moments.

Against Ole Miss, despite the emotion, the rough start, falling behind by 17 (2x), LSU fought back to tie the game at 24-24 in the 4Q. Ole Miss was reeling and LSU had all of the momentum. It felt like one more defensive stop was all LSU needed to finally flip the game in its favor at the end. They could not get it. Then, they drove down the field for a potential game tying score and got within the 10. Yet, on 4 plays they could not convert. Ball game

Against UK they had a 4th & 1 to end the game. Lane passed. There was some logic to the move given the score and the risk of not getting it give the ball to UK in LSU territory with plenty of time for a GW TD or game tying FG. So they punt, knowing one final defensive stop wins the game. They don't get it. In OT they take the lead. Again, one final defensive stop wins the game. They can't get it. Finally, UK decides to put the game on a win or lose 2 point conversion. Despite everything that had happened to that point, one stop wins the game for LSU. They can't get it.

Yesterday there were a ton of questionable decisions and missed opportunities. But despite all of it LSU was able to get the lead late in the 3Q. The home crowd was stoked. The momentum had shifted to LSU on the heels of a long TD drive. It felt like a stop there would turn the wave of emotion against Alabama and push LSU to a win. It took ONE play to kill it all.

Now, you have to give credit to the opponent. They made those critical plays. But it has felt like every time there has been a big moment in the only 3 close games LSU simply hasn't come through. That's why while the stats look great, the W-L record doesn't.

Compare it to 2019. LSU was the team that always came through in the critical moment. LSU was reeling vs. Texas in the 4Q. Texas fans knew one more stop would flip the game. LSU delivered on 3rd & 17. The Florida game was a shootout with each team answering the other. It's 35-28 LSU in the 4Q with Florida on a 70+ yard march to tie the game again. LSU gets an int in the endzone to kill the momentum and, ultimately create the space to win the game. LSU's defense is in freefall in the second half vs. Alabama. It is a 6 point game and LSU is facing 3rd & 10. Failing to convert means giving the ball back to an Alabama offense LSU could not stop. CEH makes the effort play of the century to keep the drive alive on which LSU eventually scores to keep Alabama at bay. LSU then recovers the very difficult onsides kick and bullies its way to a game ending 1st down.

There were moments in 2019 that if one play goes differently makes it a 9-3 or 8-4 season. Same is the case here. There have been moments that could have made this a (to date) 9-0, 8-1, or even 7-2 season. One team delivered. One team hasn't.

Special teams is abysmal. 35 yard punts with no hang time, poor coverage on punts, missed a fg, and not catching a short punt which would’ve given us near midfield position. I don’t even count muffed punt because it was over by then. This is a part of the problem not nearly enough people are pointing out.

Is it? With those stats, the coaches must be putting players in position to make plays. This isn’t hopeless 2014 Les Miles offense where the RB is asked to run up the middle.

It seems like they haven't been good in those moments for 5 years straight.

Lane 4th and 10 from our 20 yard line… channeling his inner Kevin Costner

I don’t really know that.

The more I’m thinking about it and after sleeping on it. I think it’s just a matter of time. The time probably isn’t this year. It will click and it will be glorious.

0/4 4th downs is back breaking, almost as good as turnovers for Bama.

When you look at it that way, that’s 6 TOs, which makes the stat disparity with the scoreboard make a lot more sense.

It isn’t just some fluke thing, Kiffin really needs to prioritize the feel for these 4th down calls.

It’s critical but also extremely simple. Throw away the analytic sheet and just look at the clock and scoreboard and use your common sense given how the game is playing out.

I’m not an armchair or Monday morning quarterback but sometimes this analytical reliance really does fail to take into account simple feel for the game.
