They do not have to man handle them for Durham to be successful. He just needs a little bit of room. Hes a homerun threat everytime he touches the ball.

If we can run the ball with any success I really like our chances. But I more want to see our defensive front dominate their offensive line. To me thats the biggest key to the game.

Your theory is sound, but….

Running against a loaded box won’t produce a lot of yardage, for sure. However, the line should still be able to get a push.
The line should be able to line up against a Defense and each man should be able to push his man a yard or 2 off the ball.
It wont produce a lot of yardage because linebackers will fill gaps and stop runner for little to no gain.
Pushing the line back into the linebackers also cuts off the pursuit lanes….

My biggest complaint is how many years has it been since the line could get a push? It’s been a while.

Is Brad Davis known for producing physical dominating line play as a coach?
I truly hope!

You are asking too much from an inexperienced OL that has little cohesion at this point, especially against one of the best DLs we will face.
I expect this OL to be very good by the back end of the season if there are no injuries.
But at Clemson, i will settle for competence, and a few creases for Durham.

Umm what? Go re-read my post. I never once said anything that could be asking too much from the OL.

Perk and Whit….completely non existent in media’s lead up to Clemson game.

Agree, the element of "Surprise" with the defense will be the difference for the Fightin Tigers of LSU!

Sounds like they'll be giving 8 guys a chance to be nasty, which personally doesn't inspire tons of confidence that they'll be good enough, much less "nasty"

I hope I am wrong and I hope I remember to come back in a drunken haze and eat my crow

Part of the problem is, no team in the SEC has a shitty defensive line. They are average at worst and some of the best in the P4 at best. The good DLs also tend to rotate a lot to keep guys fresh while OLs rarely do that for the sake of continuity. Factor in the numbers disadvantage and it’s a big challenge for an OL to just impose its will today. Only the best of the best can do it.

But there are still ways to combat this. You can spread the field to create space. Tennessee does this to the extreme, putting wideouts all the way outside the hashes to open up space in the middle. Ole Miss does this as well, and it works well for both of them. It worked for us in 2019, too.

The RPO is another way to try and keep the box defenders off balance and make them hesitate before committing to run or pass. We ran a lot of RPO looks last season, but we didn’t throw out of it nearly enough. Hitting the D with an occasional QB pull on a Read, draws and screens can also get them guessing if executed effectively.

Jet sweeps and gadget runs for guys like Thomas or Johnson fit here, as well. Enough creativity to keep the defense guessing when they see motion. The longer you can keep a defender on his spot, the better chance Durham will have to beat them to a crease and get to the 2nd level.

A big issue last year was not executing many of these plays cleanly enough. We were actually pretty good passing on RPOs when Nuss would pull the ball. This was one of most effective red zone scoring plays we had last year. We just didn’t use the pass at a high enough percentage to make the defense respect it. Nuss was a little too conservative about handing off into stacked boxes.

We basically gave up on running screens other than a few bubbles early in the season because only 2 of the WRs were worth a damn blocking and Mason Taylor was only average at it. Defenses were usually able to defend these plays straight up, so they were still able to stack the box and attack the run. That should improve this season, especially with the new TEs, Parker back and Nic Anderson.

We’ll see how much of that actually happens at Clemson. If Davis doesn’t struggle, I have my doubts we will see Curne until week 2. It’s a lot to ask for a true freshman to play either Tackle spot. I know we did it in 22, but we had to because Cam Wire was a fricking joke. He just wasn’t an SEC player. Adams and Curne are both on a different level than Wire was, so we aren’t necessarily in a “have to” position for game one.

Now if Adams does struggle, then I do think Curne will get a fair shot Saturday.

I think the bulk of the rotation will be a LG. Who knows if we will see all three guys play, but if one locks in, I think that will be it for the night.

Kelly made it sound like each is good at a particular thing. Well, he didn’t really name a strength for Chester other than his experience. But he did say Mubenga moves well, which we already knew. He’s the most athletic guy on the OL and he makes a good puller because of that. His issue last year was getting beat up physically by strong DTs.

Kelly said Echols is physically strong, and we saw a bit of that in the bowl game. He can evidently maul somebody one on one. But can he execute a pull or the other finer points on gap plays? Can a speed rusher get by him? If you read between the lines, maybe he isn’t the best at that, or isn’t fully ready yet being so inexperienced.

In a game vs a big, physical DL, I hope Echols can get in the game and hold his own. Out of the three options, he seems like a good fit for this game, at least on paper. We’ll see how it goes.

I would like him to be at LF...not RT. At guard position he just has to block the man in front of him to the ground. That will be a vast improvement from last year's LF play.

I’m happy for their time and appreciate them for their contributions. But we couldn’t establish the run vs usc last year with them.

Why can’t yall just let the shite play out before panicking? Seriously, o-line is one of the toughest positions to play in football, and it’s very clear that 95% of you guys have zero clue what you’re looking at or looking for, but that never stops yall from thinking you have all the answers and CBK and his staff is a bunch of bums

This place completely melted down yesterday when it was said that LSU could play 7-8 people on the line vs Clemson. But today when Dabo said the same shite, all of a sudden people want to talk about how awesome Clemson’s depth is. It’s insane. Just be patient and we’ll know how it shakes out

Because to a lot of LSU fans on here, LSU is always in a worse position than the opponent . Especially an opponent that is equal in talent to LSU.

I want Nuss to only throw for 200 yards and 1 TD because our run game is dominating them so hard.
