I was very critical of Mills last year and started a thread criticizing his constant complaining and flailing about every time there was a breakdown in the secondary (which was often). So I feel I owe it to him to start a thread now praising him for doing the exact opposite on Saturday.

After Rashard Robinson gave up the amazing TD catch to Coates, despite solid coverage by RR, and getting tossed upside down like a rag doll in the process, Mills acted like the leader he needs to be and walked over and stood with him, patted him on the helmet, and I assume let him know they were all in this together.

That's the kind of leadership this whole team is going to have to take upon themselves during what is going to be a bumpy road the rest of the season.

As long as the team is sticking together and not pointing fingers (or reading the Rant ), this is still a group of players that can achieve anything they set their minds to as they continue to improve.

Cheers to Jalen, Rashard, and the whole D and offense working hard to get better!!

Well said. Hopefully the Auburn game was a big wake up call.

Was it great leadership when Mills was jogging on that play?

Really brave of you to criticize a player behind a wall of Natty Lite cans from the safety of your Barco Lounger. There is a lot of that going around.

Gutsy to come here and admit your mistake.
So few do.

Listening to his interview, neither does he. Classic case of near perfect coverage just being defeated by great catch. Mills had a similar play made over him later.

Looked like he used the wrong hand to bat down that ball.

That's one way to put it. Kind of a negative spin.

A better way to put it would be to say: I still don't know how Coates caught that pass the way RR was all over him in near-perfect coverage with his hand a whisker from swatting the ball away.

But you know, you'll say it however you want to say it.

He has matured into a great player in all phases no doubt. We're still 3rd in the conference in pass defense and 4th in overall D. If we can figure out how to semi contain the run, this D will be top notch.

Do LSU players read the Rant? I'm afraid some do (probably against the coaches' suggestion)...

Nice to see this.

Just wondering though...Mills seemed like he was just hanging out/watching when that catch was made.

Did anyone else wonder how that would have looked if LaRon, Eric Reid, etc would have been able to line that one up? Feel like Coates would have had to really want to catch that ball.

Mills let up because it looked like Robinson was in position. Had Mills kept going, he probably could have disrupted the catch when Coates was coming down with it.

Of all the plays where we gave up huge chunks of yards, that play was easily the most forgivable.

RR had perfect coverage on Coates. It was a great pass and great catch.

Two good athletes an sometimes the other guy makes a great play

Nothing RR could have done better short of PI and taking the penalty

Mother fricking THIS! First thing I notices was Mills fricking dogging it and giving up letting the wr walk in for the td. In case you guys are dumb, Mills was supposed to be there for help on the play.

frick leadership. He was begging for forgiveness

Great post.

And I completely agree. Two great players, now with some maturity and leadership to boot.

Agreed. Thinking more about making a hit instead of trying to make a play on the ball. I feel like some other safeties in the past would be salivating at that chance for a big stick. Just to lower the boom and punish the receiver.

That being said...I remember a similar "kill shot" being attempted at the end of the second quarter against Arkansas by Eric Reid(?) resulting in a no time left TD because he smoked the other defender instead of the wideout. Other LSU player left the game if I remember

Karnell Hatcher smoked Claiborne at the end of the half to allow that TD
