The schools share the excess bowl revenue. I can assure you that any SEC school that plays in the Sugar Bowl will have much hgher expenses than a school that plays in the Music City Bowl.

Why would you turn down the higher paying bowl and the game that has the highest selection in the SEC after the BCS???
I think the payout is the same because of the SEC conference payout distribution, meaning Vanderbilt gets the same payout from the bowls that each bowl team gets. Subsequently, the BCS bowls would be better for a team because the sell more tickets. Most bowls require the schools to purchase a certain alotment of tickets before accepting the bowl bid. If the schools cannont sell their alotment of tickets...well then it is their losss. That is why a team that cannot sell it's alotment of tickets is probably better off, finacially, not going to a bowl in the first place.

Correct, but what does the Sugar Bowl and Music City Bowls have to do with this discussion or LSU?
Cap1 and Cotton $$$ that goes directly to LSU is exactly the same.

The payout is shared after expenses. A school playing in a bigger bowl game can shelter more money via expenses

This is a little old (2007), but this is how bowl payouts work in the SEC:
Upfront payment is made to school depending upon range and bowl game (Cap1 and Cotton are currently in the same range FWIW)..
LINK
You are correc that the payout to school would be different if LSU made a BCS game, but there is no difference between Cap1 and Cotton in terms of money.
All that said, I agree with others ... I don't understand why some fans are so worried about the money regardless.

I don't know about prestige, but IMO Cotton is more desirable as a destination playing in JerryWorld (and I've frozen my arse off in the old place on Jan. 1 more than once). If they ever add a fifth BCS bowl, I think Cotton would be a better candidate than Cap One or any other bowl. Then again, Cotton probably would have been a BCS bowl to begin with (in place of Fiesta IMO) if its conference tie-in hadn't disappeared with the demise of the SWC. Remember in the old days, the big four bowls were Rose, Sugar, Cotton and Orange.

Cap1 has absolutely no shot at being a BCS bowl in the future, and those that have been there know why.
Cotton and Chick-Fil-A are the two that are rumored to be in the running for the next BCS bowl when they renew everything in 2013.

For bowls with total payouts in the range of $1.5 million to $4 million, each school gets $1.04 million off the top. That is how much Auburn received as direct payment from the Cotton Bowl. The balance of the $3 million Cotton Bowl payout goes to the conference, which then splits the money up evenly among all 12 schools. The SEC itself also gets a cut equal to the amount each school receives. For bowls with payouts exceeding $6 million (i.e. the BCS games), each participating school gets $1.74 million. The balance goes to the conference, which takes its share and then splits the money up evenly among the remaining conference teams.

Everyone is tired of going to Orlando. The Cotton Bowl has Dallas is a great change of pace, a semi-rivalry with the Ags, and more Louisianians can afford to attend because they can drive.

I completely agree with everyone that when the BCS format changes the Cotton will be part of the mix. Under the current structure the Cap 1 is more prestigous. Yes, the new stadium in Dallas is superior to the Citrus Bowl. Yes, more fans can get to Dallas easier than Orlando, but the fact remains that LSU should be going to the Cap 1. Picking Bama over LSU is a slap to Tiger Nation.

I agree, but I don't think we're getting "passed over" by Alabama for Cap1... I feel pretty confident LSU admnis as well as Cap1 admins were well aware of the sentiment that many LSU fans had regarding not wanting to return to Orlando this year.
I think it works out better for everyone involved IMO...Cotton gets a great game that both fan bases are excited about, Bama gets a better bowl game than they deserve, LSU fans don't have to go back to the Cap1, Cap1 gets to bring Bama in that hasn't been there in a long time to play Saban's former team. Win-win for all IMO.

Cotton Bowl is a better bowl and better stage than Cap One. We'll be the only game on that Friday.

Yeah. I get you pro-cotton bowl guys logic here. Maybe we should aim for the independence bowl next year or an opponent ranked #22 - unranked. Every year, we keep playing worse opponents and some people would like to pretend like we want it that way.
LSU vs Aggies, a good matchup! I sure as hell hope not! Sure, they are on a bit of a win streak, but this isn't the 90's anymore, we've become a dominant program in football and they haven't. To me, playing against a # 18 Aggies in our bowl game, and being happy about it shows the true regression of this program, despite the current record. I was proud of our season, until I clearly see just how ugly our ten wins were to be playing who we are playing in the cotton bowl. There are other years where I think the cotton bowl would be a good match up. It's a throw away game this year, and they've put us in it. That should tell you something.
Can there be a mandatory college football IQ test on this board and a daily post limit that corresponds with that?

You're blind if you can't at least see the reasons why many of us want Cotton this year vs Cap1. You don't necessarily have to agree, but any reasonable person can at least acknowledge there are certainly legitimate reasons why we prefer Cotton this year.
And your independece bowl comment is silly as its comparing apples with peanuts. You're acting like the Cotton is some shitty bowl. The Cotton and Cap1 are for all practical intents and purposes the same tier bowl game... Great top-tier SEC bowl game, great payout, great exposure, #2 team in standings of opposing conference in both games, no championship at stake.
FWIW, a poll of Alabama fans asking whether they prefered the Cap1 or Cotton... Cotton won the poll.

Same tier? Capital One bowl gets first pick, and the Big 12 was terribly down this year, fielding a team ranked 18th in the country in the cotton bowl. You have got to be kidding me... this isn't a Dinardo LSU football program, the standards have changed and to prefer #18 over #8 in the country is REDICULOUS.

Because you agree with someone doesn't make them (or you) right.
I strongly suspect there is some fear about playing the big 10, because the big 12 is weak as shite this year and everyone wants to play them.

Hey at least we won't have to watch 10 million of those stupid fricking Capital One commercials.
Capital One! Banking for retards!

If I can afford it, yeah. I lived in Texas for a little while, the drive to Dallas isn't any easier than the one to Orlando, and i'm one of those people who actually go for the game, not the "bowl experience." If you're there to watch the game, I don't see any way that you prefer cotton to cap one.
Making a statement as to what direction this program is headed for next year is what I want to see. A win over #18 doesn't do that for me, not like a win over #8 does.
