Outdated pro scheme.....far from simplified.

Awesome. I really had my doubts coming from a 3-4 to a 4-3, anyways.

defense will have to be vanilla until they can figure it out. Keep everything in front and don't be afraid to tackle somebody.

I know that’s not the aggressive defense O wanted (and quite frankly I want to see too), but with the way Brennan, Marshall, and Gilbert are playing this is what we need. As they get better we can start adding wrinkles and blitzes.

and that has been the vast majority of the issue. DB handoffs and for some reason the S are getting drawn (or placed by us) in a position where they are not a safety net for a bust.

Aranda ran a lot of the same on the back end. I'm assuming the keys for handoffs are different and that's a source (among others) of the issue. But, here's where I get extra confused... there's not a whole lot of keys. And there is a hard and fast rule that we seem to forget about- deepest receiver gets the most attention. If you screw the keys and thus the handoff up, it should be a screw up where you end up with both the hand-offeree and the hand-offeror both go with the deepest guy, not the shallowest.

Could someone explain to me what makes Pelini's defense so confusing for these guys?

I know a lot more about basketball than I do football, but it seems if you essentially carry over a matchup zone defense in basketball to the football field, that's pretty much what Pelini's defense is. That's not something that's easy to learn.

If their keys are anything like what I had experience with then its really about the number 2 WR. if the slot (or TE or RB if they are the #2 to your side) goes out then the safety/nickle will pass that route to the CB and look for the number 1 WR either going deep or breaking in towards them.

What appeared to be the issue against Mizzou is that the safety/nickle wasn't passing the inside guy but the CB was seeing it and making the switch and the result is 2 guys cover one underneath route while the deep post is running free.

The concept is why I wasn't sold on the hire. That scheme get's ripped by modern spread attacks. As stated it is to easy to flood the zones and confuse or bait the switches to your advantage.

Bo runs a pattern matching zone

This is by far the best explanation of what is going on with this defense and how Pelini is implementing it.

We are a 180 from the days when teams would draw up a defense and it was the offense's job to figure out how to score. Anything you have to master from a reactionary approach is more difficult than doing it from a proactive approach. This of course exasperates the covid issues, which are likely the root cause of offenses running wild this year.

Across the board, Covid was a HUGE deal. It especially affected younger teams, and made it exponentially hard on teams breaking in new schemes on defense. Team facilities were completely locked down from mid-March thru July. That's four months of time for 18-21 year old kids to be out of a structured environment. The first game was pushed back 3 weeks, but coaches were only given 11 extra days of practice. That is 11 days to make up for two weeks of Spring and the entire summer to absorb that coaching, along of course with the loss of supervised training and workouts.

I am not making excuses for Pelini, as he has obviously shite the bed and needs to do a better at job at adjusting to his environment. Regardless, I would expect some level of improvement simply due to time spent running the scheme in practice and games.

Turnovers aren’t the problems. We are something like +6 on the year.

Hell it seems like the only time opposing offenses don’t score is when the turn it over.

No doubt. Hell, 5000+ kids their age and background are running nuclear aircraft carriers. They need constant supervision, a consistent message and repetition.

This brings up another issue from Saturday. In Aranda's 3-4, the dline's job was to occupy olineman and keep the LBers clean. In a 4-3, they are required to make more tackles. The dline did a decent job of it the first two games and failed miserably doing it against Missouri.

The SEC is now a pass heavy conference. Bo's defense will continue to get exploited by everyone. Aranda had the right idea, IMO

Get used to being scored on, the game has changed in the past few years. It's a lot harder to have a VERY good defense now.

Agree!!

Why the hell wasn't this stopped at halftime or later in game? Failure after failure and breakdown after breakdown. Stubbornness? Cluelessness? Ultimately it falls on Pelini. Embarrassing.

You can’t be one dimensional forever. You have to have semblance of a ground game. You have to convert third downs. We need to move the chains and keep our defense off the field more.
The offense can help the defense.

It's more difficult to learn, especially with limited time, and some of that limited time devoted to parading across campus. You can bet they also devote some of their limited time to learning celebration dances and photo-op formations.
