Sorry missed that part of the plan.. Never really consider the paperwork apart of the evac plan. I have said all along that Jindals move was probably to get things in motion. But I did also say over 72 hours. 72 hours out is early Friday not Wed afternoon..

It isn't just for paperwork. Just to get everything logistically set up. It takes time to get the barricades set up in order to force traffic one way. It takes time to get the police to clear the interstate and get people who are coming the wrong way off the interstate.

Also, don't feel too good about Nagin being at the Dem Convention. Heard on the radio on the way home that he was heading home to be here because of the storm.

ETA:

Also, the 72/50 hour difference makes it even more absurd that we waited so long last time. We waited less than 24 hours not only for traffic to leave, but for the preparation. It appears that the plan alots 22 hours just for preparation before contraflow even starts.

contra flow is not put in until really NOLA evacs which is not until 30 hours

Still we are at likely 100 hours before landfall all this could still wait according to the plan in place until Friday.

i agree that it seems early. But, you have to act serious if people are to take you serious. That's what we are doing. Hopefully, people take it more serious than you do and start preparing now. It is much better to have an extra 5 gallons of water, 42 batteries, and extra wood to bar up windows, than to not be able to do all those things AND get yourself somewhere safe.

while i agree we shouldn't panic. Leadership doesn't have the luxury of pretending that this might not hit. People don't take you serious when you screw around and act like it isn't a big deal.

Being overly cautious is the way to go. Waiting until Friday may be too late for some people. They might feel like they don't have time. They might become anxious. They might feel like they can't get to their uncle's house 18 hours away, so they'll just stay home...etc.etc.etc.

We are finally going about it the right way. Let's hope we continue this trend for the next few days.

couldn't agree more with these sentiments. Maybe your better with words but this is exactly how I feel. Katrina essentially ruined me for over a year. Lost everything, my community, neighbors, most of what I knew to be my city, all the things I had wanted to do and aspired to be 1 year out of college. I was ruined watching my family members hurt and feeling a sense that not even the most optimistic people I knew nor a single civic leader could ever give me any hope. I began to drink just to deal with the pain on a daily basis. Now that I've nearly turned the corner on all that (I have optimism for N.O., La, and the whole gulf coast, I've seen some good strides in rebuilding, most of my relatives are now back to a normal life... and I was finally getting used to feeling good again) then we have this hanging over our heads.

Maybe it's a Louisiana thing, maybe an N.O. thing but I just feel we have more to lose than anyone else on the gulf coast at this point and playing it safe and being called a fool is better than acting like it's pre-August 2005 and ending up a fool.

Congrats on working through the tough times. If only the entire population of New Orleans had the pride that you obviously have.

So this is kinda random, but it's been weighing on my mind heavily, how bad was it for Katrina here in Baton Rouge? I mean should I leave my next to campus apartment and head home to the Lafayette/Lake Charles area or no? I mean if it wasn't bad and the power outage wasn't long, does it pay for me to try and fight traffic?

I was living in Livingston, and it wasn't too bad at all. We lost a few trees. If you have trees anywhere near you, the winds could easily knock them down. The power outages weren't bad at all. The traffic was awful because of all of the people from N.O.

Heck, most of the people I know that live around Baton Rouge were too busy helping out those that were being pulled from New Orleans that were living in shelters. Shows you how much of an affect it had on B.R.

If the storm goes to the east of us, it'll be similar. If the eye is to the west of Baton Rouge, you had better take a vacation.

I can't say what BR was like during K but going back to Lake Charles for anything other than battening down the hatches sounds like a bad idea. If it goes west BR is a better place to be than LC. BR would also likely be a better place to be than Lafayette. But definitely take care of people and property in those areas if you need to, but maybe don't ride it out there if it's headed west like that. I can tell you from experience that you'll never forgive yourself if you do have the chance to help a relative save their home and you don't and it gets destroyed.

We had a lot of trees down but a bird can fly over our wires and piss on them and the electricity goes out. I live by Indian Mound.

Thanks, I already promised the fam that if I'm here alone I go home but I also have a friend thats in the dorms so if he's stuck here, I told him to come crash here, no need to ride out a hurricane in a dorm, of course I suppose the same could be said about an apt :)
So power out less than a week in BR or around a week?

it really just depends on where you live. some people were without power for a day. Others for 10 days.

The only thing we know for certain is...there are many uncertainties over the next 4-5 days that could influence/change where Gustav goes and how weak or strong he'll be. For me to tell you I know more than NHC would be true arrogance. In fact, satellite loops show me Gustav drifting a little to the SW. If that's the case, the models will have to be re-run to account for that shift to the south. Gustav certainly hasn't been following any of the tracks. Again, the movement continues to be very slow so we'll have plenty of time to react...IF we need to over the weekend.

Catman, I spend half my week in Biloxi. I see a fraction of the amount of people along the coast in MS as there were prior to Katrina. Stennis is freakin before bay st. louis for christ sake. Evacuating a peninsula (which is essentially what SE La is) with more people is definitely a different situation than evacuating the sparsely populated MS coast. I won't argue you weather knowledge but you are off point on the differences b/w MS and SE La.

Sorry but you are wrong about the population, I live and work in Biloxi. Us hwy 90 is not populated as much but thats a small percentage of the coast and the majority of those people just moved off the beach inland.
