FWIW, the evacuation part wasn't the frick up. People were told to leave but just decided to stay (hell most people who rode it out in the dome, drove there)

The screw up was when the state and city leadership began the implementation of a 72 hour evacuation plan less than 24 hours before the storm was going to hit. Our governor and N.O.'s mayor sat on their hands and had a very good plan that they refused to follow until it was too late to accomplish.

I'd say that was part of the screw up.

I'm surprised how many people on the board are so confident that the game will be played. If the storm is heading out way as of Friday morning, Jindal will have to order an evacuation. Contaflow will begin on Saturday I think. We can't play a game in that.

we played a game during contral flow in 1998.....

They made those decisions due to a late, conserative shift in the forcast by the NHC. Friday at 5pm did not grab most of the populace until they got home and aware.

Just something that sucked due to timing, hence the debate of this thread.

...yet all these people that had "no way to get out" of New Orleans sure found a way to make it to FEMA to pick up their checks didn't they?

I'm sorry, I don't buy that. I specifically remember that shithead mayor of New Orleans getting on tv Thurs/Friday before Katrina hit, begging and pleading people to evacuate and not take it lightly. They had time to leave, people just wanted to ride it out. It's ok to ride it out in Baton Rouge, but New Orleans is a different story and most civil people that live there realize this.

The planning and response might have been screwed up, but when you're putting your life on the line, do you really sit around and wait or do you take initiative and follow suggestion?

Its amazing all those people had time to leave and the contraflow worked better for Katrina than it did for Ivan...

Look what Katrina has created, people freaking out while a storm is still over Haiti

Your memory is wayyyyyyyy off.

Katrina was projected to hit between Panama City and Appilachicola, FL all the way up to the 10:00pm cst advisory released by the National Hurricane Center on Friday night.

The official track was moved 300 miles west from the 4:00pm cst advisory to the 10:00pm advisory. No one in the Metro NO area had any knowledge of Katrina going our direction until after 10:00pm on Friday night.

That means that the majority of the population didn't know anything about a hurricane heading for NO until Saturday morning when they woke up. They started calling for evacuations at 8:00am Saturday morning and mandatory evacuations as of 5:00pm Saturday evening before Katrina officially hit at 7:00am Monday morning.

Therefore, most of the metro NO area only had 48 hours to evacuate away from Katrina. This is not nearly enough time to move a metropolitan area of over 1 million people.

Simply put, NO and Louisiana never had the benefit of time with Katrina. Those are the facts.

I just watched the Weather Channel at 5:50pm and they said that Jindal declared Louisiana under a state of emergency.

You might want to check it out Nash Roberts Jr.

"...Dr. Masters blog on Weather Underground, I thought he presented a reasonable explanation of all the UNCERTAINTY in the models. Plus NHC even stated, "THERE IS VERY LITTLE...IF ANY...SKILL ININTENSITY PREDICTIONS AT THESE EXTENDED RANGES. "...referring to days 3, 4, & 5.

..."I want to be the bullseye at 5 days since that means it will goes either side of that". Bob Breck who nailed Fay, drop dead shot, between the eyes.

You are obviously the one whose memory wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy off:

quote:

On August 26 Mayor Nagin advised New Orleanians to keep a close eye on the storm and prepare for evacuation. He made various statements encouraging people to leave without officially calling for an evacuation throughout Saturday the 27th before issuing a call for voluntary evacuation that evening. He stressed the potential danger posed by Katrina by saying "This is not a test. This is the real deal." He was hesitant to order a mandatory evacuation because of concerns about the city's liability for closing hotels and other businesses.[9] Nagin continued to announce that the city attorney was reviewing the information regarding this issue and once he had reviewed the city attorney's opinion he would make a decision whether to give the order to evacuate the city.

On Sunday morning August 28, Katrina became a Category 4 hurricane,[10] and, with fewer than 24 hours left before the storm's landfall, Nagin declared a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans, the first in the city's history, and the first for a U.S. city of this size since the American Civil War.

the facts

Nagin was a freakin' idiot and didn't order an evacuation because he had the brook trout look. He isn't a leader and didn't know what to do when his city needed him most. He and Blanco blew it under pressure. They knew of the threat, knew it was probable to hit New Orleans. They knew that a Category 4 Hurricane would devestate New Orleans and that the levees wouldn't be able to hold. They also knew that they had a good plan that would get the people out of New Orleans if given the 72 hour timeline that the plan called for. He then proceeded to wait until within 24 hours of the storm to force the evacuation.

But, it's good to see that some of you have forgotten what really went down. Continue to make excuses for our poor leadership and you'll get the same results. His poor judgement caused people to not take the storm serious and many of those people died.

Oh, one other thing. There weren't over 1 million people in New Orleans. There weren't even over 600,000. In fact, according to the 2000 United States Census, the population of New Orleans was 484,674.

So, are there any more facts that you want to fill us in with?

ETA: The storm also shifted 15 miles further East hours before landfall. Not sure where you got that whole thing about it moving west.

I believe the Saints played the Ravens in a pre-season game at the Dome THAT Friday night- post is right on the money. But the contr-flow worked even with such short notice. The game will be played, this thing is slow plus to early to tell where its really going. The US Navy track brings it right up the river though
