Hurd had over a 7ERA most of last year

And also posted an ERA of almost 10 during spring scrimmages. He looked great at the end of last year though. IDK man we'll see how it plays out, but I trust CJJ to work it out.

That's always a good time!

Let's face it, Jay likely promised Thatcher that spot in the rotation after he was nails at the end of last season. He didn't have the best performance of spring practice so you have to believe that Jay will honor his word and give him ever opportunity to keep that spot. IMO it will be up to Thatcher to keep that Friday starter's role moving forward.

I have no problem with that decision especially knowing the dudes we have in the pen who can come in to relieve him if he is not on top of his game.

Jay doesn’t really strike me as the type to promise anyone anything

Thatcher is as good of a candidate to start Friday nights as any we have on the team currently IMO. I'm not saying Jay handed it to him undeserved at all, but perhaps using it as a way to get the best out of his team.

But I think you'd be fooling yourself if you don't think that he would make that offering for extremely talented players. Players like Paul Skenes, Jacob Berry and Tommy White didn't come to ride the bench, but yes they still had to work for it and earn it.

Thatcher has the competitiveness that you want in a Friday starter, but he has not outperformed every potential starter based off of the spring scrimmages that I've seen. Now obviously Jay sees a lot of things that we can't see so I'm also sure that this start is based on those things in addition to what we as fans are able to observe.

There’s a difference in telling a player “hey you’re better than anyone else we got. You’re going to start” and outright promising a spot that you brought in 2 other players to compete for.

I’m sure he told thatcher that he wants him to be a starter this year.

I highly doubt he promised Thatcher the Friday role.

I would almost guarantee that he told Thatcher, Luke and Gage all the same thing. “You have a chance to start on fridays next year.”

I can agree with that. But we didn't have Luke or Gage at the end of Omaha last year. What I'm suggesting is that Hurd was the first guy that he likely told that to out of the three and other potential starters ie Griffin, Nate etc.

Maybe the word "promised" wasn't the best word for me to use. But I have no doubt that knowing how Jay operates and motivates players, that he has been getting Hurd ready for this role since last season ended.

He’s not going to promise a kid the Friday night spot while trying to recruit over him. I’m sure he was told he had a shot during player exit interviews but I seriously doubt he was promised anything beyond that.

I think Hurd will play a huge roll on the team this season. I just don’t believe he will end up being the “Friday Night Starter”. He just hasn’t shown the ability to be consistent enough from outing to outing. Your #1 starter has to be a guy that you know what you are going to get. I had hopes that Jump might eventually be that guy, but it’s worrisome that he is starting the year dealing with “something”. You just can’t be digging into your bullpen in the 3rd or 4th inning of game 1 of a three game weekend series once you get to SEC play. Hurd has been very boom or bust.

Ok I admit that "promised" wasn't the correct word that I should have used. And more than one proven starter was necessary so you have to try and recruit over players due to alot of reasons including injury etc IMO.

But if this was based strictly off of the competition results in the scrimmages lately, I don't think that Thatcher "won" the opening day start based off of that alone. I think there are some other things that contribute to this and how he stayed the course and performed last season is part of it.

I agree with your whole assessment. And that's why I think there is another motive to Thatcher getting the start. Holman has gone longer, been more effective and efficient and to me looked more like he could go deeper into a game 1, which is what you want.

IMO giving someone deserving the honor of starting opening day is not equivalent to saying he'll be the Friday starter for the rest of the season. It's my fault for wording it the way I did with the word "promised".

Right. I don't necessarily think against the competition that we start the season against that it's a bad thing to give Thatcher the opportunity to prove himself to being the right choice to open the season with. And the guys brought in know that also.

But it was pretty clear that Luke might give you a better chance to do the things you want to do on Friday nights and has been that dude in the SEC before.

I think his mind is "right" already. He just needs to hit his spots more consistently. Jay said today that in his bullpen he threw yesterday, the bullpen catcher didn't have to move one time, so that's a step in the right direction.

But let's not kid ourselves and say the last time he faced live batters he was anything near being in the zone consistently. Much in contrast to Holman's outing at the same time.
