IMO giving someone deserving the honor of starting opening day is not equivalent to saying he'll be the Friday starter for the rest of the season.

Seeing as the first three weekends we aren’t playing one team for a three game set, perhaps Jay is playing matchups. Maybe Central Arkansas is tougher than VMI and maybe Northern Illinois is a better hitting squad than Stony Brook.

Or maybe it’s as simple as Jay feels that Hurd is our #1 guy.

VMI will be the better team. Certainly more offensive threat. Both teams will have a few arms but we should be able to put up some runs.

Absolutely no problem with Hurd getting the Friday night nod. If he falters, on to the pen. Holman will have no problem taking over if Hurd can't hold the Friday night spot. In fact, I think Hurd will have to be really, really good to hold onto it. Holman is a true vet.

This year he's going to give up on the team before first pitch.

Lions play tigers twice this year. Can I get lions take one for 3:1 odds?

Think jj will continue to win 3/4 of midweeks, but has a deeper staff this year. Just a guess but Guidry gets a shot to finish the first couple of games? Little either starts midweeks or mid relief?

I've already put in for 1/2 day vacation on Friday. No way in hell I'm missing opening day!

I’m thinking Coleman gets one of the Sunday or Monday starts. But it’ll be one of those 3

I think Coleman is going to be a pleasant surprise for us this year - maybe the midweek starter with the ability to move to the weekend rotation if needed. Then an asset in the SEC tourney and post season. Coming into his second season removed from TJ, I think he will show big improvement over last year - especially in getting the walks down which will help his overall game.

There’s a difference in telling a player “hey you’re better than anyone else we got. You’re going to start” and outright promising a spot that you brought in 2 other players to compete for.

I think you are right about pitchers. They are too inconsistent to be promised a starting spot. But Tommy White and Jacob Berry absolutely wanted to proved they could be third basemen. I’d bet they were flat-out promised.

He just hasn’t shown the ability to be consistent enough from outing to outing. Your #1 starter has to be a guy that you know what you are going to get.

And that is Luke Holman. But Hurd was coming off injury. It usually takes pitchers a long time to get the feel and become consistent. Maybe he’ll get that over the next couple of months. It’s all he’s missing to be great.

Outside of a handful of guys last year this was predominantly all the SEC starters. People forget that chase dollander was as dominant an SEC pitcher could be in '22 then struggled in '23 and he was moved down the rotation. Hurd, Holman, Jump, and Herring all have the potential to be #1 starter and whoever is the most consistent will be.

But being a Friday night or #1 starter does not need to look like Skenes or Nola every year. That is having unrealistic expectations. How Hurd performed in the post season last year is all that is needed to be the number #1 or Friday Night starter in the rotation. SMH

So the smoke on Jump might be an ember….

Canevari said on the Hannycast that Jump threw a Bullpen yesterday along with Hurd and Hollman. He's been dealing with a sore back, so they wanted to see how he'd respond to the BP. If his back isn't sore, he'll likely be the Sunday starter.

When he’s on, he’s great. And no one in college baseball returns with as much success in high leverage situations as Thatcher Hurd:

Wake Forest semifinal game
Florida game 3

I think will prove to be one of the better pitchers in the country this year.

This makes sense. Jay said on Friday that “Jump had no arm issues whatsoever” so I was worried something happened in practice this past weekend.

Sore back is not great, but better than a setback in his TJ recovery. Jay is getting tricky tricky with his wording in press conferences
