How would you manage the depth at QB?

Clearly Joe Burrow starts 2018 and 2019.

I think Miles Brennan needs to red shirt this season.

So depth chart would be

2018:
JB, JM, LN

2019
JB, MB, whoever we recruit this year

2020:
MB, whoever we recruit in 2019/2020

2021:
MB, whoever we recruit in 2019/2019/2021.

That would give us a fair bit of depth this year. But in 2019, we have genuine depth and 2020/2021 we could have red-shirt junior and 5th year senior QB.

Barring any injuries we are set.

I am assuming by 2019, JM and LN transfers out.

The trick is to somehow convince JM to stay on in 2018 season. I mean McMillan is not going to start at P5 conference or play QB on Sundays. So why transfer to division 1 AA and play ball in obscurity. It is better to finish his career as a backup at LSU.

Lowel Narcisse, I just do not know. Dual threat QBs have not done well at LSU. Brandon Harris, Anthony Jennings, Jordan Jefferson to name a few. Is he a genuine passing threat?

that would be great but its just dumb to state this as fact before he ever puts on a helmet for LSU

Recruiting Board says LSU looking at JC QB in 2019.

quote:

Finley was not only the quarterback who camped. Jacob Free, who signed with Vanderbilt back in 2017, recently transferred to Northwest Community College

quote:

Along with Finley, Free was the most impressive quarterback on hand. At 6-5 and 200 pounds, he is the ideal size and is experienced, and could receive an offer from the staff in the coming weeks. In talking to sources at the camp, LSU has a plan for quarterback in 2019. Perhaps a junior college addition could be the course it takes.

I am no JJ sunshine pumper but he is one of the winningest QBs at LSU. Also he was listed as a Pro Style QB in recruiting FWIW...

Also, JJ beat Nick twice. Let that sink in

We have to see how they all perform in August. Then we'll know the pecking order.

If JT Barrett can play at OSU for 13 years idk why Joe Burrow can’t do it here.

Depth? Sounds like we just have a bunch of warm bodies instead.

Yes. Depth assumes more than one of these guys is above average SEC QB. I’ll wait for some game time results

Yeah, Herb was great at LSU. I would also consider Mauck and Flynn to be dual threat QBs. Mauck sort of adjusted to more of a pocket passer after his injury.

Dual threat is just a label and there are many variations. Drew Brees was a dual threat guy at Purdue.

you have to let brennan decide if he wants to redshirt. I don't know why so many posters act like it's not set that burrow will start. of course he will, unless he gets hurt or something unforeseen happens. and brennan would likely be no. 2 backup. if brennan wants to redshirt, and I doubt he would, you could offer #2 spot to McMillan, at least the first shot off the bench.

I would try to make each of them as good as they could be. That’s what I would do.

Burrow is likely the best by a substantial margin. If not well...

Ummm, let them compete and play the best QB. Then go from there.... who knows what clicks with each guy. I don't care about DT vs. Pro, why can't we just care about productivity and wins?

And every year recruit the best guy who fits what you want to accomplish. It never makes sense to me not to be signing a QB each class...... Jucco, grad transfer, or whatever works.

Everyone competes and earns the spot! Anything else seems to weaken the team if you ask me.

Why wouldn’t he want to redshirt? Unless Joe is a first round material and declares early he’d be better off with another year to put on weight.

Before this year is over, I would not be surprised if Brennan (or even Narcisse) competes for time as starting QB.
They are very talented and may actually have higher ceilings than Burrow.

I'm betting he would strongly disagree.

Maybe he just wants to start somewhere for one year just so he has no regrets. He's been more than patient here.

Sometimes the simplest answer is the absolute best thing to do. I agree with you 100%.

And yeah, I doubt McMillian sticks around, he is graduating (or has at this point) and writing on the wall should be pretty clear he's never starting here. Grad transfer while you can to go play somewhere

I believe McMillan is considering Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin.
