What will you be happy with this year?
Its Lane's 1st year and I don't want to expect too much.... but then everyone talks about a $40 million roster.
Those last 4 games are going to be brutal. Are you expecting playoffs?

the 2007 Flynn season is one of the best seasons lsu has had for a qb.
Some addt'l context re 2007:
- We had new OL and WR coaches and a new OC.
- Flynn was a first year starter
- Our OL was truly makeshift (Carnell at RT and Hitt at RG)
- LaFell had one of the worst cases of the drops in LSU history and Early missed several games.
- We played a veritable who's who of DCs (Foster, Boom, Saban, Strong, Heacock/Fickell) w/ Flynn at QB.
- Never scored less than than 27 pts w/ Flynn starting (neither Tebow nor Burrow can match that).
- The '07 O was the gold standard for us until '19.
Flynn won't go down statistically as an all-time great but his '07 season was quite impressive when the full picture is shown.

His junior year was trash in sec play. He ate off rent a wins. 700 yards and 8 tds came off 2 games. Jordan Jefferson in 2009 has a better qb rating in sec play than Nuss in 2024. Let that sink in.
In '09, JJ was coached to throw to open receivers to avoid the int fest of '08. Most QBs throw receivers open. Completely different set of demands than Nuss in '24. Let that float around.

My basic standards are always the same. Play hard, play smart, coaches put the players in position to win. I’m excited for Lane because he’s our first Xs and Os HC since Saban and he’s the best on his side of the ball. I like Baker, I think BK got in his way as well, we can go into that a bit if you want. My concern is always Oline and Dline, those seem to be hardest to predict IMO. As far as record, it depends, if we play well and the other team makes one more play a time or two I can live with it. I can’t live with patterns of failure that lead to losses.

If you want I can go look up more, it was just an example. The Harold Perkins hate is another example of scapegoating because the team didn’t do well. Go look at where he ranks among alltime sacks and TFLs at LSU, you’ll be shocked at some of the guys he’s ahead of but The Rant hates him because BK failed.

Most college qbs do NOT do this. The ones that do this, end up playing on Sundays.

He does get undeserved hate. I still think he could've been an all American SS.

Nuss was just not a good quarterback. He stayed at LSU because he got paid. Jefferson was ten times better than Nuss.

I still don’t even know what you are arguing.
You just threw a red herring in from a different era who no one considers an all time great season individually to explain why Nuss wasn’t mediocre?

Well the first idea we had for him was the correct one. You play him there and let him grow into a better player. What we did was move him inside then we had him splitting time inside and out then had him at the Star finally. This idea that he was too small to play OLB or rush the QB consistently is crazy. Xavier Atkins, one of our own guys who went to Auburn, is 6-1, 210lbs, he had 9.5 sacks and 17.5TFLs for Auburn last year. We went through a bad DC then Baker was handcuffed year 1 so there were a lot of bad decisions made with Perk. Jessie Tuggle loves him and he’s pushing for a starting spot in Atlanta already at ILB in their 3-4.

Because of the way they’re viewed. Etling is viewed favorably now but he wasn’t when he was here. I’m not trying to downgrade Flynn, just showing that our fans tend to not see things straight, especially in the moment, because of circumstance.

I thought I read somewhere that the idea behind this was to get him on the field for more plays. I could be wrong or misremembering.

It may have been, I know Mascona floated this idea that Perk was behind it but both Kelly and Perkins said there was never any conversation like that.

The guy ahead of him was a backup for the Texans last season so if he earns it, he’ll get a shot.

I mean one guy’s team went 12-2 with the two losses being in OT and won the national championship. The other went 8-4 and played in the Texas bowl
So yeah I get why the fanbase has a soft spot for Flynn
No one calls that a great lsu qb season.
There are still people on the nuss bus who use his yards to say it was one of the best seasons for a LSU QB

Next time you see a thread ranking LSU QBs alltime pay attention to how high he’s rated in comparison to guys who were far more productive and efficient.

Agree, I’ve seen this argument but usually in the context of 1st season starting because it came about during 2024 comparing him to JD5s first year. I don’t think it’s an alltime great season. Burrow, JD5, Jamarcus, Davey, Hodson, Mett. I think those are your best single seasons at LSU. Nuss 1st year is in the next tier, JD5 S1, Mett S1, Herb’s best year, Flynn, Jmarcus S1. That group of seasons.

That's how they're coached (including Nuss). That's not how JJ was coached. Not the same.
