should have kept phil bennett though....

actually curley should have been.. an assistant.. and PB the HC....

and he should NEVER have been FORCED to hire a certain offensive offensive coordinator pun intended

PB always seemed to pissed about something. I suppose he was so disenchanted with the circumstances. He was the last coach to ever chew my arse......for parking on the sidewalk

I was living in St. Petersburg, Russia at the time. It was like 3am and I called WJBO and got them to put me on hold so I could hear the game. At $2 a minute, I'm glad they won.

he came in late in the third with LSU up 14-0. Brian Burgdorf who led them to victory the week before over USM couldn't do anything, and neither could Freddie Kitchens, who played a series or two as a true freshman.

Palmer had played some at QB a few weeks earlier vs Ole Miss and had a beautiful td pass in that game. He played about as fine of a game as I've ever seen in the late 3rd qtr and 4th he played. Cut it to 14-7,then Andre LaFluer put us up 17-7 which really salted it away. But Palmer came back and they cut it to 17-13.

Everyone knew on the two pointer which he successfully ran vs Tennessee three weeks earlier (no Chavis wasn't their DC yet )that he'd take the snap, hesitate like he was going to drop back to throw and then dash to the right side. Stubborn little bastard got stopped on the one by 8 Tigers.

I remember watching this game on TV. I could not believe what I was seeing throughout the game. When it was over it was the closest I have ever been to being in shock!

I went to that game just out of sheer loyalty. As optimistic as I am,I didn't think we had a chance.
Pretty much sums it up for me too. We were living in Tuscaloosa at that time and most of my co-workers were naturally big Tide fans. One of them offered me the Tigers +30, but I didn't have faith in them so I passed on that bet.

Curley beat Stallings.
One interesting point, Curley being from the Tuscaloosa area (grew up in Northport) and played for Stallings at aTm, early on during his tenure at LSU alot of Tide fans would tell me that if he was successful at LSU they expected he would be the next Tide coach. That type of talk died quickly when he failed at LSU.

My bro. has a VHS of that game that they used to sell in the bookstore. Probably should convert that to DVD before it craps out.

Of course, Jay Barker would have won that game with one hand tied behind his back.

It was the difinite end of an era for Alabama. They never won a national championship after that.

It's a perfect illustration of the old blind squirrel analogy. (ETA, although I'd love to see how Curley could frick that one up. If there was one thing he was good at, it was fricking up an analogy/euphemism)

Four fricking seasons and ONE decent win.

Some folks have no idea how spoiled we've become.

I was on the phone with my dad as the game was being played. My dad kept saying to me "We're beating those damned bastards."

That game should be a reminder to everyone that games are played on the field and that upsets happen very often in college football. It's why I laugh when I hear "there's no way this team can beat that team." It happens.
