How the baseball team looks, now that fall is over (Pitching)

Posted on 11/25/24 at 5:27 pm
I will start with pitching today and hit the position players tomorrow.
Projected Starters:
Friday- Guidry
Saturday- Shores
Sunday- Anderson
Weekday- Williams
Closer- Evans, Schmidt
Depth chart:
1.Gavin Guidry
2.Kade Anderson
3.Connor Ware
4.Chase Shores
5.Casan Evans
6.William Schmidt
7.Anthony Eyanson
8.Zac Cowan
9.Mavrick Rizy
10.Jacob Mayers
11.Cooper Williams
12.Grant Fontenot
13. DJ Primeaux
14.Connor Benge
15.Chandler Dorsey
16.Jaden Noot
17.Kade Woods
18.Jake Brown
19.Trenton Lape
20.Dylan Thompson
21.Dalton Beck
22. Connor Simon
23.Deven Sheerin
I wouldn't put a lot of faith into the depth chart. It will certainly change in the spring. Numbers 10 through 22 are almost a guessing game on my part right now. Sheerin is unlikely to pitch this year. I expect to have one or two redshirts or transfers from this group as well.
Gavin Guidry- The biggest surprise of the fall to me was Gavin Guidry. He finally turned his attention to being a pitcher only and it shows. He was probably our most effective pitcher this fall. It was mentioned to me by a very reliable source a couple of years ago that the staff saw him as a possible starter. I didn't see it at the time, but now I am believer. I still like having him as weapon on the back end and I haven't seen him stretched to 6 innings yet but he is being groomed as a starter this fall. Not only is he a strong possibility to be a starter he could conceivably be our Friday night guy. He's a fierce competitor and rises to the occasion. He could be the best pitcher to take on the other team's Friday night guy. He also wears #8 and I believe he is the emotional leader of this team.
Kade Anderson- The best thing about Anderson is that you know what you are getting when you put him out there. He is experienced, reliable, steady and effective.
Connor Ware- Connor has been a great find from the JUCO ranks. Good size, lots of movement on his pitches and is hard to hit. He is definitely in the running for a starter role.
Chase Shores - Future first rounder is going to be hard to keep out of a starter role. There were some control issues but nothing glaring. He hasn't pitched in a long time, so hopefully he has the wrinkles ironed out by the spring.
Casan Evans- This guy has been a big find. He is not a big guy but he has the biggest arm on the team right now, though I expect a challenge from Shores this spring. I seen him hit the top two velocities this fall at 98.9 and 98.8. He signed as a top 100 two way highschool player. He has taken some batting practice but has primarily been a pitcher this fall. His first outing he hit 97 mph but only once. I figured it was some extra adrenuline for his first scrimmage. He didn't hit 97 again or 96 for that matter until then end of the fall. Against ULL he was lights out but they didn't have a radar gun. Then next weekend at the scrimmage is when he hit high 98 twice. Before the fall he was known for having a nice curveball. Sky is the limit for this guy.
William Schmidt- I think William was held back some in the fall due to heavy usage his senior year of HS. I believe we are going to see more of the real Schmidt in the spring
Anthony Eyanson- Eyanson is still in the running for a starter role. He spent the fall working on a new pitch, so I expect to see more of who he really is in the spring
Zac Cowin- Steady and dependable is the best way to sum up Cowin. Knowing what you are going to get from him is his biggest asset. He should play a big role this year.
Mavrick Rizy- Rizy has good control for a big man. He has mainly thrown offspeed this fall. He is another freshman pitcher that will play a big role immediately.
Jacob Mayers- When Jacob is on, he is good. Control issues are still a problem. We will see what the spring will bring but he has the stuff to be a big contributor.
Cooper Williams- We need lefties in 2025 and 2026 so Cooper was big pickup late in the process. Top 100 player out of HS.
Grant Fontenot- Grant right now is solid.
DJ Primeaux- I believe Jay felt DJ would have a breakout season last year but it didn't quite happen. DJ is in his third year after redshirting as a freshman. He has been steady and effective this fall and with the shortage of lefties on this team, I expect to see him get his share of innings this year.
Connor Benge- Big arm for a pitcher that doesn't have great size. Connor is sort of like most of these pitchers in the middle of the pack. I expect some to rise up the ranks in the spring but it's anyone's guess who it will be.
Chandler Dorsey- Expectations are pretty high for Chandler. I think we will see a jump from him in the spring.
Jaden Noot- Noot was ranked as high as Shores coming out of HS in the same class. He was one of the biggest HS arms to make it to campus. There has been slow but steady progress from Noot this fall. He isn't there yet but could be a big piece in the future.
Kade Woods- Kade is getting his arm back after dealing with injuries. The velocity is already higher this year than last. There are still some control issues but he has been effective this fall.
Jake Brown- I love Jake as a position player but he certainly has potential as a pitcher. Lefties are a need for 2025 and 2026 so Jake is getting his shot as a two way player.
Trenton Lape- Top 100 HS player before he had TJ. He was even ranked higher than Anderson before the injury if my memory is correct. Redshirted last year because of the injury and was pretty skinny. He has filled out some this year and the arm is pretty good. He hasn't had a great fall but there is a lot of potential there.
Dylan Thompson- Redshirted last year. He is skinny with an arm that barely hits 90mph. He is just way more effective than you would think. Players tend not to make good contact and he gets his share of strikeouts. He has definitely grown on me.
Dalton Beck- I like the potential of Beck's bat more than his arm at this point. Right now he is steady option from the left side.
Connor Simon- Unfortunately Simon didn't get to pitch this fall and I don't believe it is related to his previous arm issues. I really hope Simon gets a chance to show us what he has.
Deven Sheerin- I was really excited about this guy out of the portal. Great size, 98mph and a nasty curve was the profile coming in. It is unlikely he will pitch this year. The leg not only has to heal but it also has to heal enough that it doens't effect his form that could lead to an arm issue. The only good news is that he has two years before he is draft eligible. So hopefully he will be a big piece next year.

I have to think that if Anderson is starting then they'll want Williams as a LHP option out of the pen once SEC play starts unless Primeaux really takes that next step

Not seeing Guidry being a Friday night starter....has he added any pitches?

Those top 7 are the top 7. That's all you really need to know. The roles will work themselves out.

If Guidry is our Friday guy, we're screwed.

23 pitchers, some of these guys will get processed out.

We rantards seem to mostly be in early big agreement.
Is OP serious? I’m up for whatever. But this doesn’t “seem” right.

Why? Because tigerdroppings says so??

No, because third-year pitchers hardly ever go from being not trusted in high-leverage spots out of the bullpen to Friday night SEC starters.

I agree with OP that they are grooming Guidry for a starting role. Not sure if he will win the Friday night job.
He has been dominant during the fall and Yeskie gives him a ton of attention.

Downvote me all you want but Guidry is not a Friday starter.
He has to prove me wrong.

Before the fall started I had Friday Shores, Saturday Anderson, Sunday Eyanson and it could still work out that way. As fall has moved along, Guidry has actually been our best pitcher. I don't know if he can go 6 productive innings but I wouldn't doubt him.So I started wrapping my head around him as our Sunday starter. Then I started thinking about how much he likes to compete. I think Guidry will be motivated to go up against the other teams best pitcher. I believe it will actually raise his game. It might be a little farfetched but I'm starting to like the idea.

Didn't he pitch the final out in the Championship game as a freshmen? He loves the pressure of being put into high-leverage spots.

Do you know who led our team in WHIP this fall? Do you know who probably has the single best pitch on the team? Do you know this is the first year he has solely concentrated on being a pitcher?

Well, that poster has seen more LSU baseball this fall than 99% of the posters here, and he gave his opinion.
I don't agree with his opinion necessarily, but I'm basing it on two seasons watching Guidry pitch and he's basing it on that plus watching him recently. It's hard for me to argue, and most of us appreciate the info.

The final out of a game which we were up by a million runs. Not to mention, first batter he faced in that game he gave up a tank. He started off strong as a freshman (TYFYS vs South Carolina), but once opposing hitters realized that his only plus pitch is the breaking ball, he became incredibly hittable.
That carried over to year two as he fell completely off a cliff his sophomore season to where he fell out of favor when it came to high-leverage situations.
Not saying it's impossible for him to suddenly go from that to favorite for the Friday night job in the span of five months, but it would definitely be an anomaly.

Great write up, Guidry will be used more and more but I have to agree with others that he's going to be a 2-3 inning max effort type guy. If he's not landing that slider you have to be able to go get him quickly and not in the first inning on Friday night.
