I dont see how you come with a&m defense being on the field 15-20% more than LSU's D.

I think he got that by comparing the number of plays each defense was on the field [url]LINK ] and noting Texas A&M's D was on the field for 917 plays compared to LSU's D which was on the field for 757 plays. He probably then divided the difference (160) by 757 yielding about 20%.

Well luckily for LSU this years Cotton Bowl is going to be played in Louisiana.

I typed in college football statistics in google, went to the first link and then to total defense statistics. Took me like 5 seconds.

Don't be mad at me b/c you have trouble with simple math.

I asked a simple question. His post was stating that their defense was on the field more because their offense ran more plays. It's his thread and argument therefor his responsibility to prove his point, not mine.

Seriously, you are just being a prick about it.

So they've been on the field for more plays....maybe this is just an inability to get off the field by forcing 3 and Outs?

I don't really care what offenses they faced, or how many plays they have been on the field, A&M's defense gives up more points than LSU's, and since points, not plays run or yards gained, win games, ill take LSU's defense.

But there is a cyclical argument - Defenses in Big 12 are ranked lower cause they face better offense BUT you can also say offenses in the SEC are ranked lower becuase they face better defenses.

Moral: Let's just settle it on the field, here's to a great game

Have to disagree with this part of your post. Take 2006, for example. Save for the Holiday Bowl (a shellacking at the hands of Cal), A&M was in position to win (or lose) just about every game in the 4th quarter. Ags suffered 1 score losses to Tech, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, and the defense gave up the deciding scores in all three of those games. In fact, the D was a glaring weakness all season long. The redeeming factor that kept the Aggies in those games was that they were among the leaders of time of possession. Simply put, playing keepaway long enough "hid" the defense and kept them in some games that they probably had no business thinking about winning.

I say that to say this: having a faster offense does affect the defense a lot. 3 and outs are hardly a problem for the Wrecking Crew--they came up with crucial stops on the road against Okie State to keep us in that game in the first place, stymied Arky enough to give us a chance despite some offensive miscues, shut down Nebraska, brick-walled OU, and sealed the game against texas.

good point. I'm just arguing there are ways to color/qualify every statistic.

But what really matters is the W. I'm glad your defense has been clutch this year, i just hope we prove you wrong

You also have to take into account how inept LSUs offense has been in some games, forcing the defense to stay on the field.

But as I pointed out in my OP, the A&M defense was on the field for ~20% more plays than LSU.

You pointed out how much the offense was on the field and assumed that meant the defense was on the field for more plays. It's probably true but you didn't point that out with a direct statistic.

Don't think it's a blowout by any means, but I do think we'll wear you D down in the 4th and come away with the win, your D is going to see a lot of snaps, I hope they have been conditioning

Tigahs rotate 8-10 on the D-line throughout the game.

aTm may win, but it likely won't be from wearing down the LSU defense.

There is about 7 weeks between from the last time either of these teams played until game day. There are no buzz saws when you have over 40 days off during bowl season. That is what makes the bowls so stupid and why so many do not play up to their potential. One other thing. We have not played to our potential all year. I think A&M has. Room for improvement leans our way. Doesn't mean we will win but just another factor. Biggest factor is the lay off. Miles has typically been pretty good at getting his teams ready to play after these BS long layoffs.

There are two stats that i think will prove prophetic...3rd down conversion %, and red zone TD %.

On offense A&M is ranked 48th in 3rd Down % against LSU's 20th ranked defense for 3rd down %; while LSU's 3rd down % offense is ranked 88th against A&M's 16th ranked 3rd down % defense. Clearly both matchups favor the defense, but the bigger advantage goes to A&M. I think we will sustain longer drives and get deeper into Tiger territory on a consistant basis all night.

The second stat is RedZone TD %. A&M's offensive redzone TD % is ranked 49th against LSU's 70th ranked RedZone TD % defense. While LSU's offensive redzone TD % is ranked 100th going up against A&M's 17th ranked redzone TD % defense. I think we'll capitalize more on our redzone opportunities than LSU, you'll settle for field goals while we punch it in. There is a huge discrepancy with the redzone stats in A&M's favor.

Of course there are two great equalizers, turnovers and the fact that Les Miles sold his soul to the devil and is the luckiest SOB this side of the Mississippi

Not sure why the poster focused on the OSU game as Johnson was "hurt" for all 6 of their opening games
.

quote:

A&M would have another win instead of a loss.
They would have made it to the Big 12 title game.
Only game during that time where they had no chance was the Missouri game.
Arkansas didn't throttle them either
.

First of all I just want to say I can't wait for the CB. Should be a great game. It's nice to find a board that actually talks football.

The reason the poster was referring to the OSU game is because Johnson threw a horrible pick (his fourth of the game, Tannehill only has 3 in six games ) in the closing minute of the game. Johnson over threw the receiver so badly it looked like he intentionally threw it to the defender. OSU gets a first down and kicked the winning FG.

Just to add a little clarification to the Aggie season, a season of two halves.

A&M switched to a 3-4 D under first year coordinator Tim DeRuyter. In the Arky and OSU games the D was still adjusting. Playing better that last year, but still adjusting no doubt.

Everything clicked for the D following the Mizzou game. Other than a poor first half against Baylor, The D has played at a completely different level. Much can be attributed to Von Miller having worked though his injury and finally playing at 100%.

Add to that -
Sherman benching Johnson and going with Tannehill
Cyrus Gray running for over 100 in the last six games
The two red shirt fish tackles coming into their own
... and what you really have is a team that truly is a completely different team than what Arky, OSU and Mizzou saw. On both sides of the ball.

I'm not too much of a homer and have actually picked the Tigers to when a tight game. It's just hard for me to get past our record against SEC teams. However, this is the best D we have had in over a decade, so I'm giving us a fair chance. The D finally plays aggressive football and is exceptional at confusing opposing QB's. If your QB gets rattled easily, he will no doubt be rattled by DeRuyter's D.

See you in Dallas
