Oh wow I went to school with this girl. Haven't seen her in years. What a throwback and had no idea she did this.

Do they humanely put mike to sleep when it comes back or just ease the pain as much as possible?

Dr. Baker has constantly emphasized that the treatment should give Mike 1-2 more years of QUALITY life.
If he is ever in pain or otherwise suffering, whether six months or five years from now, he will be euthanized.

This article has more details about Mike and his treatment and condition.
His caretakers have a very demanding job with a great deal of responsiblity. And they all do a wonderful job and should be congratulated on their very hard work and all the success in the world to them as they go forward..
And thanks for noticing something very important.....

IF he is suffering, I completely trust that Dr Baker would do what is best for Mike....He is a very serious man, a very good DVM and very serious about taking very good care of Mike properly.....
it's not the craziest idea either to try to treat him before taking a premature step..... Meanwhile.....
GEAUX MIKE VI !!!!

Still interesting how we demand that animals don't go through a lot of pain and suffering but we don't do the same for human terminal cancer patients.

Thank you Guava Jelly !!!
Mike VI and other Mikes have been a huge source of information for LSU SVM and science overall. Too bad most people have no idea how important.
And, again, the HELL with PETA....

bullshite. There is a never ending wealth of sympathy and financial support towards cancer. Fund raising, volunteers, and when anybody is diagnosed, they are given nothing but love care and concern. And then there's the medical angle.
Hearing this argument makes anybody who uses it sound like a titty baby who is jealous of the attention Mike gets. It's like my 2 year old getting jealous of the 4 year old's toy, even though her room is filled wall to wall with toys.

Nice photos and story!
I've always wondered if PETA fanatics have pets dogs or cats. Do they think no one should have a pet dog or cat?

I don't think you understood his comment. I believe he was implying we should euthanize cancer patients who are suffering, if that is what they want.
Posted on 6/13/16 at 7:05 pm to RealityTiger
You misunderstood him.
He's saying it's interesting that we consider it humane to euthanize terminal animals who are suffering a lot of pain, but inhumane to do the same for people

That's great! I hope all is well with your dog. LSU SVM has been just great for my "best friends" !!

This is why having a live tiger is important from a practical standpoint. At no other vet school do students get this kind of experience in caring for endangered big cats. Experience with Mike and his predecessors has helped to develop a wealth of practical knowledge for the fields of animal husbandry and veterinary science that exists very few places on earth. Not only is the live tiger tradition an important part of the school's culture, and a cornerstone of the vet school (one of the strongest in the entire university), the knowledge gained from caring for the animals is a boon to posterity.
that's some smart thinkin' right there.
