I'm 65 and our 69 Tigers would have won the NC if old Arch Manning did not beat us in Jackson

63... great memories! Grew up in BR, started going to games in 1962. Remember many favorites like Joe Labruzzo, Sammy Grezaffie, Nelson Stokley, John Garlington, Art Cantrelle, Casanova, Mike Anderson, Andy Hamilton, Bert Jones. Stretched time at LSU to 5-1/2 years, so got 6 football seasons in as a student. Lived in Johnson Hall as a freshman. Would begin lining up at stadium at 4 pm to get in 7 pm game on student ID. Not sure how we survived those days. Great times!

Started going to games in 1961 - recall our players the best but also saw the Bear,Stabler, Spurrier, Archie Manning, Pat Sullivan, etc. come through Tiger Stadium.

Hello podnah - I enrolled at LSU in '56 and had less than $20 to my name.
Been wracking my brain for the name of the low class eatery just down the hill from you = You could get something they called "shrimp creole" for less than a dollar. All it was was a bowl of steamed rice with a pinkish tint - and every once in a while you could find a little speck of something that might have been shrimp. I ate lots of that stuff. Some of the servers worked for meals.
Cannot remember the name - it cramps my style when trying to tell stories about that time of my life. Seems like it started with an "S" -
Thanks

Beat you there by 1 year. The fall of my first semester at LSU was in 1957. I was fortunate to see from the student section Jimmy Taylor play his senior season for LSU. His forte was running with the football and seeking out defenders to run over. The most vivid moment that is burned in my memory from watching him that season occurred during the home game with Georgia Tech. Taylor had broken clear on the left side and was heading toward the North end zone. I was in the lower student section near the sideline where he was running. A GT linebacker or safety attempted to make the open field tackle by hitting Taylor thigh high.
The end result was the defender being knocked unconscious and Jimmy continuing on his way.
The core for the 1958 NC team were sophomores that year. Cannon, Robinson, Fugler, Rabb, etc., and their talent was very evident, but Jimmy Taylor was THE MAN. That season ended with the uneventful record of 5-5-0. One amazing thing about the ’57 team is that two of its players later became enshrined into the NFL Hall of Fame (Jimmy Taylor and Johnny Robinson). From my time starting in 1957 until the present, many great players have contributed to the tradition of LSU football. Too many to mention. Today we are witnessing a QB who is putting up unbelievable numbers, leading the Tigers by showing intelligence and toughness on the playing field and running an offense that could only be imagined in our minds before this season. Hopefully the Tigers can continue on to reach their ultimate goal.
Would be a great present for my 80th birthday which comes early next month.
Geaux Tigers.
And I got you by a year - arrived in '56.
And yes - Jimmy Taylor was THE man - he specialized in
quote:One of my favorite quotes was after he went to the Packers - Coach asked him why he veered into a DB on a TD run when he could have gone the other way and walked into the end zone.
seeking out defenders to run over.
Taylor's response = "gotta make 'em hurt a little, coach."
Loved that man - Even given all Cannon's acclaim, it is hard to get over your first love = Jimmy Taylor.
Burrow may do it for me tho.
do you remember then name of that el-cheapo restaurant in Tiger Town ?? just west of the pool hall??

There was no “every game is televised” back then
True dat - I was in CA in 60 and in St Louis from 61 - 64. Found out the papers in CA didn't have anywhere near the Sports pages the Advocate had = it was hard to even find the score. In St. Louis I could pick up the game on a station out of Shreveport - but I had to park on the railroad tracks to get good reception. Only had to back off the tracks a couple of times during that tenure there.
Got to NASA in 64 and had no trouble listening to every game after that.
I would diagram every play on a pad of grid paper - wish I'd kept some of those diagrams.
sorry for commenting on so many threads - but LSU is a passion of mine and when someone triggers a memory, it makes me feel good to respond.

Way over 60. And I went to almost every game during that era.
Back then LSU had fine teams and it was all about defense, defense, defense. The team in 1969 allowed fewer yards rushing in a whole season than in one game this year. Tackling was stellar.
And LSU from 1969-73 had a tremendous running game. Art Cantrelle, Allen Shorey, Chris Dantin, Steve Rogers, Ken Addy, Mike Shoemaker, and so many more...they weren't spectacular but they got the job done in the ground-and-pound fashion.

And just like that, with a simple question, The Rant redeems itself.
I'm only 51, but I wanted in this room.
