He's a disengaged, mediocre recruiter and that just doesn't work at ND

His classes were consistently the best of any program outside of the South except USC (w California recruiting base) and Ohio St. Given academic restrictions and geographic limitations, he did very well. Much has changed since the time ND was a college football superpower. Your perception of Kelly seems to be coming from a perspective that ND should return to glory. I’m not sure that’s a realistic expectation in the modern era.

Kelly personally may not have been a charismatic recruiter, but he clearly put together a staff that could recruit with the best of them. I’m excited to see what he can do with a natural recruiting base in LA and free of ND’s academic restrictions.

Before Kelly, I regularly told my ND friends that their glory days were gone for good. The Midwest just wasn’t the recruiting hotbed it once was and Catholics were no longer at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder looking to sports as a way out of poverty. Against that backdrop and with the added academic restrictions imposed by the ND administration, what Kelly accomplished was remarkable. I told my ND friends they were crazy anytime they grumbled about the couple of rough spots along the way. I didn’t put him in a class with Saban, Meyer and Swinney, but I always thought he was in the upper echelon of coaches beyond those 3.

Notre dame always played an extremely easy schedule

Couldn’t be further from the truth. Notre Dame’s SOS over the last 5 years has ranked as the 13.8th hardest SOS. Averaging a top 15 strength of schedule while going 55-10 is a pretty big accomplishment considering ND’s lack of local talent and difficult admission standards.

I put him in the top ten. Maybe top five with a more competitive team. Regardless, he managed to get them there often.

OK I actually have inside ND contacts and I can assure you that is so wrong it's asinine. They had no idea and once they did, they were mad as hell at him, at us, at ESPN, you name it, they were not happy about it. They still aren't. The whole "Oh yeah well we were done with him anyway" smoke is total garbage. This hurt them and they know it. Freeman is a hail mary for their program praying he can be the one that can overcome that academic governor on their football program in the age of the SEC and Saban.

My view of CBK at ND was influenced more by the pasting Bama gave them in '12 than anything else. I didn't follow ND.

I didn’t know he was the winningest coach in College Football. Knew he was SOLID, but always hated ND regardless. And thought they where always overrated.

That said. The simple fact that he decided to jump to the SEC WEST and leave a Cush job shows me he has BALLS and believes in himself

Didn’t think of him much, other than I remember his early struggles with being too angry with players and only average results in the field. But I’m eager to see what he can do here.

I thought he had a very well coached team that lacked elite talent to win championships due to the schools location and lack of conference affiliation. Also I thought he seemed like a dick but was smart and could coach.

His recruiting classes were deep but lacked top-end talent. Look at the number of 5 stars he landed. Also, one of the biggest reasons ND couldn't win big games under him is they never had championship-level QB play, and QB is probably the position on the team least affected by academic restrictions.

Honestly, I held him in higher regard at Cincinatti as an up and comer than I did at ND. I just kind of forgot about him early in his career there because ND gets so much hype and they wouldn't live up to the billing. The last few years I took notice a lot more of his coaching abilities and the progress as a program.

I thought he was a good coach with his hands tied behind his back. So he was never a threat. But now. just wait. Just hope it’s not to late in his career.

He was a solid coach at every stop. His accomplishments at ND are very understated. Despite the tradition & blue blood, it is not an easy school for recruiting. He rarely had a top 10 class, but has seven 10+ win seasons since 2002.

I had him as a top 10 coach most years& top five in many. I never considered Kelly a possibility for the Tigers. No, he is not the most personable guy & will rub many in the media the wrong way, but if he wins, who really cares.

This seems to be the prevailing attitude among Tiger fans, which kinda makes me wonder if this really was the best hire.

I remember thinking he badly outcoached us in both the bowl games we played them in even though we had the better team both times.

Again, most 5-stars come from the South or California. Apart from Ohio St, what program outside the South or California was regularly pulling in more 5-stars than ND? As to high in QB play, I would put Ian Book in that category.

Because LSU fans had unrealistic expectations? Who do you think LSU could have gotten that wouldn’t have evoked the same response in some segment of LSU fans?
