quote:Dean, Shhimpf and Mitchell were not on the 06 team... which was Laval's last year. And yes... 5-6 with a 6.14 ERA is pretty fricking shitty. Again, Louis Coleman didn't become the pitcher he was until changing his arm slot 3 times along with his stride another 3 times. Whose doing was that do you think?
You also claimed that Dean, Schimpf, Mitchell, and Coleman were shite and that Lavals last season was 06 lol. You don’t know a whole lot

Not to mention it was PM and staff who decided to let Dean hit. Laval brought him in to pitch

Yep.
And it's his arm that eventually ruined his career. He tried the shoulder surgery after 2009 because no one would draft a DH only guy. He had to prove he could play a position.

Did some digging just for fun. Laval's last recruiting class signed in November 2005. Players in bold actually stuck with the class and made it to campus in 2007. If the player was on the championship team in 2009, he's also underlined. Not listed is Jared Mitchell who was a two-sport athlete and signed with Football and was allowed to walk on for baseball. But I count him toward the totals at the end.
Pitchers:
Shane Ardoin
Ragan Baker
Kellen Bozeman
Jared Bradford (JC transfer)
Blake Dean *did not pitch
T.J. Forrest
Troy Grundy (JC Transfer)
Matt Jackson
Tony Sedlmeyer
Kye Wilson
Position Players:
Ryan Adams
Lee Haydel
Jamie Johnson
Stephen King
Jason Lewis (JC Transfer)
Milton Loo (JC Transfer)
Sean Ochinko
Jacob Rhodes
Ryan Schimpf
Toddrick Stevenson
So 11 players from that class showed up on campus. And just 4 remained for their 3rd year to help win a championship. 2 of those (Mitchell and Schimpf) would have been at LSU regardless of the coach. Ochinko and Dean were Florida products which Smoke recruited hard and heavy.
As for the freshmen (true and RS) from 2006 who were still around in 2009:
Buzzy Haydel
Louis Coleman
Chris McGhee
Paul Bertuccini
Nick Pontiff
Nolan Cain
Ryan Byrd
That makes 11 holdovers in total for the 2009 team that were in some way associated with Smoke.

Just now getting into this thread... are people doing the "won with Smoke's players" argument again?

How far have we fallen can't even beat Norte Dame
We lost a series to Kansas the year after we won the CWS. We lost a series to Appalachain State in 2012. We lost 4 senior leaders in the lineup and our entire starting rotation. It happens. If people expected this team to be firing on all cylinders in February, then I'm sorry you set your expectations there. Mainieri said this team would have growing pains throughout the year. Maybe let the season or, hell, even a few weeks play out before yoy make an analysis on the capabailities of the baseball team.

Partially. Only worse, he was saying PM inherited a CWS-caliber team.
PM won with some of Smoke's players. Dean and Ochinko were great gets, although like josh pointed out, Smoke thought Dean would be a pitcher. And there were some freshmen in 2006 who played crucial roles. But again, Coleman would never have been the player he was without Terry changing everything about the way he pitched.
I can listen to the argument about PM winning with Smoke's players to a degree only because we don't win without those guys that Smoke recruited on the roster. But I don't think that should take away from the accomplishment going to PM solely. Because no idiot would think that Laval would have won us anything 3 years later... at least I hope not.

Again you’re moving the goal post and lying about what I said. I never once said he inherited a World Series team but not surprised you’ve had to derail the thread since you can’t counter or make a valid point. It doesn’t matter who played where those players were here when CPM arrived so saying he built the program from scratch and had nothing but shite to work with is just not true.

TJ Forrest pitched against LSU in Omaha in 2009.
Point for Smoke.
Point for Smoke.

Yeah, its not like Notre Dame is one of the most historic athletics universities in the history of college sports

He took a shite program over in 2007 and had them in Omaha in his second season, won the whole damn thing his third.
It's astounding how stupid you are.

quote:He had a shite team to work with. You are the one who started talking about CWS and teams. Then you "moved the goalposts" to start talking about individuals. The program had to be rebuilt. Period. We sucked in 2007 too because of it. But changes were made both with recruiting, style of play, and even how and where guys played. that doesn't happen without PM changing everything. Just because he had 5 talented guys out of the 40 smoke left, doesn't mean that a rebuild didn't take place from the ground up.

Wrong CPM didn’t build this program from the ground up and doesn’t challenge for titles every year. And saying a 64 team playoff is the same as a 2 or 4 team playoff couldn’t be farther from the truth.
1. Yes, he did build the program. It was in shambles when Smoke left and devoid of talent. Smoke only left a handful of players that ended up being contributors
2. Define "compete for championships every year." Mainieri has had the program as consistently elite as any program in the country. Since his arrival, only one program, South Carolina, has multiple national titles, so if that's your definition of "competing" then you need to change your definition.

That’s just a false statement, one bad year doesn’t equal a shite program you fricking retard. Keep up the false narratives because you have no serious argument.
