For every great play Shaq made at LSU, he'd make one dumb mistake...miss a dunk, get an unnecessary foul called....

He was still raw.

Hack-a-Shaq got criminally out of control and Dale Brown can't coach for shite.

(although I love Dale and he was great for the program - just not a good "we got the horses" coach)

Didn't help that UNLV and Duke were beasts then too.

Hell, how did LSU not advance past the Sweet 16 with him?

What was even more amazing was he played with star point guard Chris Jackson and stud 7-0 center Stanley Roberts.

I remember we played LSU in the NCAA's one of those years...Shaq had a monster game...but we escaped with a 3-pt win. We had Kenny Anderson and Dennis Scott that year.

yeah i remember that GT team, there was one other guard - weren't they the 3 amigos or something - and a pretty good guy at forward - Cremins had a good team and run during that time.

Dale Brown was a great motivator ('86 final four team is a good example) but not the best x and o's coach though he did have tex winter at the time.

Yeah it was very frustrating growing up in those years and not getting to the S16!

Dale mismanaged that team Shaq's first year. Yeah that GT team was good but we were up by 19 at one point and CJ played like crap that game, probably because Dale finally tried to reign him in a bit and get some others involved.

Shaq's second two years to be fair probably not enough overall talent, but that effort against UCONN was pathetic nonetheless.

Ummm also CJ was a soph and a ball hog and Stanley and Shaq were freshmen. There was this thing called the 3 pt shot that Walton and Alcindor or Russell did not have to deal with

This is probably a more fair question Stro. We absolutely should've made two while he was here and probably 3.

I think we got screwed in the seeding process his last year with a 7 and therefore had to play Indiana in the second round. But the flip to that is had we played to our potential in the regular season or maybe Dale doesn't try to assault a player in the SEC tournament we earn a better seed and control our own fate.

He whipped us that year but 87....

That's another one Daddy Dale mismanaged. We had them beat with an inferior ball club in what basically was a Hoosier home game in Cincinatti.

Then Dale goes into a stall even though they couldn't stop Nikita Wilson, Fess misses the two free throws, and the refs swallow the whistle as the Hoosiers hack us to death down the stretch.

Not to mention the refs let Knight get away with acting like a spoiled child on the sideling. Should've gotten a second technical and been tossed in that one.

That 89-90 team was so loaded, they should have at least made the Final Four. Not sure they would have beaten Vegas that year, but didn't they beat them in the regular year? That was soooo long ago. I am pretty fuzzy on it.

yeah that Knight debacle was hard to take.

remember what Knight said after the game? someone asked him if he was worried about losing when LSU went up in the second half - he said he was until he looked down the court and saw Dale (something to that effect, don't remember the exact quote).

Knight took out that phone at the scorer's table if I remember correctly.

We did beat UNLV in the PMAC that year 101-97 I believe. About 2,000 empty seats for that one too if you can believe that.

But our team was pretty dysfunctional by the end of that year. Doubt we'd have stayed with them.
