How about running a few option plays? We got gashed yesterday with it.

Let Burrow run it 4-5 times a game.
You have to admit that we appeared defenseless every time UF ran the short-side option. I'm just glad they didn't try to run it more than the 2-3 times they did. No one even touched the ball carrier for at least 10 yards.

Canada jet sweeps work. Don’t know why those aren’t in the playbook

I'm willing to bet E can't envision an option without a FB for the dive option (i.e. triple option).
At any rate, I'm more of a fan of just a straight called QB run (or RPO) where instead of a pitch you can use the RB as a blocker. But yeah, the option a couple times a game goes a long way to confusing those LBs. Especially if you can suck them into your OL instead of those guys having to chase them down.
quote:me either. They are also wonderful of getting a lead (or otherwise additional) blocker to the point of attack too (when run from behind center).

They worked because our defenders routinely rush full speed through the line and whiff on the tackle. Mullen saw that and planned to exploit it with the option.

Kind of hard to run the option when Jaret Lee isn’t on the team anymore

quote:Swing and a miss. That did not happen on their option plays. We simply had no one there to defend it. We were left with only one guy vs their QB+RB, same each time they ran it.

It is in playbook. Sullivan ran one yesterday for 7 yards (I think).

I think the OP is talking about "traditional" option plays... with a pitch man instead of a mesh point.
Either way, I think we should run them more too. BUT, I think E has left the 'P' out of RPO. Put that back in there. It should be a 'triple option' in the sense that it is either a RB run, a QB run, or pass.
I might have missed it, but I have been looking specifically for it... I haven't seen a read-at-mesh that Burrow kept and then passed out of it. It has always been a run.
------ ETA: Intentional Sidetrack ----------
Does anyone feel as the season progresses E is trusting Burrow LESS?
I'm seeing fewer checks into audibles. Or think (imagine?) I am.
In regards to screens, which we can't seem to execute worth a damn...
In my day, with an antiquated offense, screen pass to RB (FB middle, HB flat) was always in the QBs back pocket as an audible. Rarely a called play except in special situations. I wish we would do that. Having 2 or 3 runs and 2 screen options (RB, WR) when you identify both potential blitzs AND where's your safety should be SOP.
Note that the WRs if RB screen, or RB/offside WR if WR screen, need to run routes on those audible-screens. Why? If you call a screen on a blitz that they faked or pull out of you better have more than one option.
And the RB turns the screen into a drift into the flat in that case and WR does a streak in that case.

Never thought I’d see the day where LSU fans were asking for MORE short-side options.

quote:one a game doesn't cause a defense to do jack shite. Like when Miles would do one with Shep in the first qtr and then never even motion him the rest of the game. It's just a quick hitting stretch play at that point and doesn't worry DCs one bit. If you're going to only run one a game, at least motion to threaten it.

We ran the jet sweep motion pretty consistently last night.
We ran an actual jet sweep twice. One for a 7-9 yard gain the other for lost yardage

Watch again. At least once, the defender was fully committed to Franks and he pitched it perfectly for a significant gain. That's how it's supposed to work, but he didn't even have to wait foir the defender to commit to him. Never even considered that he might pitch it.

The defender should have forced Franks to keep the ball inside.

quote:That might have made sense, but normally the first defender must goes after the QB. Maybe after the first time they should have told our guy just let Franks keep it and we'll crank him. I'm surprised they didn't run that play more often tbh.
