I was reading the thread someone started about Chris Jackson. A poster commented about the enthusiasm that surrounded the PMac, and now... well...not so much.
Some contribute it to Jackson, Shaq, etc. The fact of the matter is this... Dale Brown was the main reason for basketball's popularity in Baton rouge. I don't think he gets enough credit.
Yes, I was fortunate to see players like Chris Jackson, Don Redden, Shaq, Dwayne Scales, Ethan Martin, Ricky Blanton, Vernell Singleton. But I was even more fortunate to witness the Dale Brown era! That's the point here guys. He gave us the magic. Like him or not... I credit Dale for my LSU Basketball Golden Years!

Actually Dale is the reason it sucks now. Remember that whole probation thing surrounding Lester Earl? That was Dale's doing.

I saw the first game he coached at The Assembly Center and could tell even back then he was going to be fun to have around. A few weeks later he showed up at my house and presented me with a new net for the basketball hoop on the roof. Sports is entertainment and he was PT Barnum personified.

as much as I complained about Dale, we never had a sustained BB program since he left.

Lester Earl lied.
quote:

In the August 22, 2007 Baton Rouge Advocate, Lester Earl issued an apology to Brown, then-assistant head coach Johnny Jones, and LSU in general for his role in the NCAA investigation. Earl now claims that the NCAA pressured him into making false claims against Dale Brown or else he would lose years of NCAA eligibility.

I think you guys need to knock the cobwebs off. Dale wasn't that great of a coach. His only success came with overachieving teams.

Probation from over a decade ago isn't the reason we suck now.

Dale was absolutely a great coach. The current state of LSU's program has nothing to do with the probation.

Dale Brown was always a thorn in the NCAAs side. They were after him and LSU's program. A witch hunt was led by the NCAA and they used Lester Earl.

You are entitled to your opinion, as am I. Fact is, we have not had basketball like the Dale Brown era since then. It was rocking and fun!!! We were respected.

He had consistant success and we were always in the mix in the SEC from '77 until that lying douche LE came to campus.

Uh no. That would be like saying our football team sucked now because of Curly Hallman in 1993 (of course our football team doesn't suck....this is just an example).

The excitement for LSU basketball from the early 70's to about 1993 was palpable. Dale created the entire thing. If, and I emphasize IF, Dale was responsible for a downturn in enthusiasm due to probation, you can't hold that against him almost 20 years and two coaches later. We've been to the final 4 since then so I think we've recovered from Dale.

The problem with the basketball program now belongs to the people that control it now.

"Had that talented group stayed together LSU would have had another run at a national title."

They didn't, so LSU didn't. Still a great coach.

I'm going to assume you are in your 20's........Daddy Dale made LSU BBall into something for the first time ever. The NCAA then went after LSU when Dale was out the door, pressuring a young kid to lie for them.

I'd take a young Dale back any day.

I loved Daddy Dale, most of the posters on here are to young to remember. The NCAA went after him and used Lester Earl to get him, because Dale spoke out about the hypocrisy of the whole damn institution and it pissed them off.

He's the second all-time winningest coach in SEC hoops history. Behind only Adolph Rupp. But, yeah, he wasn't so hot.
