4th-rder Jake Mangum signs with @Mets for $20k (pick 118 value = $487,900). Mississippi State OF, all-time SEC hits leaders, one of top senior signs in @MLBDraft, contact hitter with well above-average speed, good defender with plus arm in CF.

I guess Mangum had no leverage at all and the Mets knew it. He really wants to play baseball.

Still seems low.

20k is a lot of money for people from Starkville.

Not sure why anyone is surprised, this is what happens to seniors in the draft regardless of where they are drafted. With no leverage you typically sign for peanuts. Lot of guys get $10k or less.

Seniors have hardly any leverage for contract negotiations. That is why most players bolt after three years, they know their value drops...even if you're really good.

Mangum has a Wade Boggs' type swing. He should rise to MLB quickly as a contact hitter if he can stay healthy. Duplantis needs to get on a long toss program to build some arm strength, but he should get a look as well if he can hit .300 per his usual.

Duplantis got $10K will be in Brooklyn
Parents will still have to support him while he pursues the major league dream.

Smith still trying to get a little more out of Yankees. But should happen soon and will be assigned to Staten Island minor league affiliate.

More common than not, really.

It's why you're starting to see a push for higher minor league salaries. Getting paid $1500 a month only during the season isn't exactly livable. Not getting paid at all in Spring Training or Extended Spring or Instructs, not great.

If there is any pro team to try and squeeze an extra 100k or so out of, it's definitely the Yanks.

That’s fricking bullshite. MLB needs to do something about this, you should have to pay these kids at least 50% of true slot value.

How is that even possible? 20k?

How the frick is he suppose to live off that?

I don't know how all organizations do it but some teams have living arrangements taken care of during the season. After the season most go home anyway and work out on their own according to team guidelines.
They are on the road so much anyway, they have hotels or apartments blocked out for the season and two players will share a room. Not much different than summer college ball.

MLB teams punish you for being a senior because you have zero leverage. It sucks but that’s the Nature of the MLB and their draft. I hate it

McDonald's doesn't give a signing bonus.

But McDonald's pays their workers a way better salary than minor league baseball players get.

Mangum got way more than a lot of the other Mets senior-signs. Some of them got $1k. And will make about $2 an hour while playing baseball.

I wonder how one kid telling them to piss off, taking his 4-year degree and going to work for $100k/year (giving up baseball) would affect things moving forward.

I’d have to think teams would reconsider lowballing their high draft picks to the point they can’t live independent of their parents.

This happens every year. A lot. You just don't hear about it because those guys aren't drafted in the top 10 rounds. If they're drafted at all it's really late after the rest of the organization filler spots have been taken up by guys who agreed to sign for $10k.
