NC game stats:

12 passes under 10 yds. for 65 yds and 3 TD's.
7 passes between 10-25 yds. for 109 yds. and 1 TD.
NONE for over 25 yds....he averaged 5.4 yds. per completion.

Final stat 19/27 for 174 yds. and 4 TDs.

Lee or Hatch could make any of those throws.

This thread has gotten way out of hand. The point that is trying to be made is that you can't write the Arkansas and Kentucky games off last year as "bad bounces" if you aren't going to say that we won Auburn, Florida, and Alabama due to "good bounces."

Hence, if you are going to say that we were two plays away from being 12-0 in the regular season, you also have to say we are 3 plays away from being 7-5.

I'll explain further....

If D. Byrd had dropped the pass in the end zone in the Auburn game, we most likely would have lost.

If Chad Jone's hadn't sacked JPW and caused a fumble, we probably would have lost.

If Hester would have come up short on 1 of those 4th down calls against Florida. We would have lost.

SO..... IN SUMMARY......
The plays happened the way they did. We went 10-2, won the SEC Title, and got a little help from Pitt and then demolished OSU to win the national title.

Some of these rah rah people can't see that we're just as close to being an average mediocre team as we are to being the most domintant team in college football---by a substanial margin.
A few plays separate us from perinial BCS players to annual residents of Shreveport.
Miles has made some good decisions & gone into many games having the team unprepared.
Now had USC or any other school had as many narrow escapes as we have had the past few seasons, they'd view them as the luckiest team to ever take the field.

this entire post is FULL OF FAIL ....just at the top of my head:

vaughn missed 5 FGs...we missed 2 FGs and dropped 2 TD passes ... 4+4+3+3 > 15

LSU was 5 for 5 on 4th down against florida & it wasn't even close

auburn last year was not a bailout...byrd caught the TD pass with 4 seconds left...if he drops it, we still kick the game winning FG + we have 1 timeout

actually i'm done wasting my time and i vote this worst post of the year

Missing 5 field goals is uncharacteristic & just plain freaky. Especially for a guy that seldom missed. Dropping two td's & missing 2 FG (giving our kicking history isn't). We were lucky.
Go back & watch Hester's last 4th down conversion. He DID NOT get the yards on his own for the first down. He was hit behind the line of scrimmage. The refs gave him the spot.
There was :01 remaining on the clock--not :04.
Had Byrd bobbled that pass, time expires. Fortuntely, it didn't. Another prayer bailed Miles out of on boneheaded decision.

Name a NC team that hasn't had some.

A review would have moved the clock back to 4 seconds had we needed to review it.

See above.

How exaclty is a game winning TD vs. Auburn a bone-headed decision? He knew his personnel and went with a good call. He has already said he probably won't be making some of the same calls this year because this team is different. That's called good coaching.

I hope so.

Having arm strength isn't what I'm concerned with. I'm concerned with how they'll react in the fire.

Randall could throw it long and I'm sure practiced like a Davey O'Brien winner, but once he got in the mix, he had serious confidence and consistency problems.

Did I ever tell you the story how Randall got to LSU?

Having a great team around them helps, along with the Wiz.

Randall had a goofy motion and threw it like he had small hands. I don't think he was really the prospect that Lee or JJ are. No doubt though that these guys are going to have to go through some tough learning experiences, you can't really develop pocket presence without it.

Correct, but you know defenses will be after our QB and will try to affect the way he operates more so than probably we've seen in several years. You affect the QB, you affect everything.

I agree that all champs have a bit of luck along the way. But I've never seen any team escape the amount of times the Tigers did. Too many close calls for a team of that caliber.
Flynn-Byrd was boneheaded because it was extremely risky and you didn't need it.
He had a consistent leg in David that more than likely would have hit the FG.
I really hope that he doesn't take as many chances this season. With an inexperienced qb, he won't be able to afford to.

depends...if we can consistently get decent yardage on 1st down, like in many games last year, the QB will have some opportunities to make some plays

the FG was 50/50 at best given the distance/angle/situation. the call was a good call but Flynn took a little long in snapping the ball. it was fabulously executed though.

I like what Studs has done with the OL. Remember last year was his first year also. Those two first year coaches have taken this team to another level. Keep an eye on the Special Teams play, Joe Rob is another great hire by Les. Talking with a couple coaches last month in TX.,they couldn't quit talking up Joe Rob. At one time he was the recruiting coordinator at S. Miss., back when they were pulling in some very good players.

The Wiz will spread the wealth. Many to get touches on the ball this year.

Why is everbody up in arms about Guilbeau story? He can be a horses azz when he wants to be,but this story is head on if you understand football. We have no exp @ QB and our ride could get rough.Teams will make us pass by putting everybody in the box including the Waterboy! I rather have these expectations aginst us,rather than going into the season ranked 2 or 3.

Marcus Randall story?

Back when Jimbo got the LSU job. He came in kind of late in the year. Jimbo made a call the a coaching friend of mine and asked about a QB in the state of LA. My buddy said knowing it was kind of late in the game, "Go over to Glen Oaks and talk with Nolan Gill!" The kid there is kind of raw, but moves well and has a strong arm, very coachable. The rest is history.
