Grimes building O-Line toughness

LINK
Our O-Line was always good, but when it came to lines like Bama and Florida mostly Bama they seemed to lack this edge and they would lay down. Grimes is turning these guys into Monsters with technique and attitude. I honestly think we average about 180 rushing yards a game and Harris .... Or Jennings will be one of the least sacked QBs in the SEC.

That's alot of confidence based on an article in May.
J/J I hope like hell it's true.

Will need great o-line play so the new QB can get settled in during the 2014 season.

This. Picked a great time to have such a stacked OL

Sounds like another good man on the staff. If he can get the O-line to produce, huge win-win for us.

Great article. Grimes seems like a quality individual. I like the toughness he's bringing too.

I think the toughness has been there (esp physical), by and large, for years. 09 being the glaring exception, and that was fixed by 2010. if anything, there seemed to be some mental/ technical breakdowns with Stud's guys, particularly on certain pressure packages. which is why I really like this part:
quote:
Grimes said because today's young people grow up in a video game culture he emphasizes the visual component and tries to expand his players' vision to see not just what is in front of them, but the whole field. He wants them to know the running back's path and speed, the quarterback's launch point, what's going on in the secondary. Often a particular defender's location can reveal a blitz pattern or some other nugget of information.

if stud read this he would shite his pants in confusion

That was a great article. We have john wayne coaching the line.

I don't get this at all. Bama and Florida have had some of the best, if not the top, D-lines in the country. Naturally LSU, or anyone else for that matter, would struggle against them compared to playing lesser teams. I have never seen our O-line "lay down"

Sadly that was last year against Alabama in the 4th quarter

I really can buy into this story/story line.
For years, I always felt like Va Tech was a team that played the game (to borrow a quote from Mike Gottfried) with a mean streak. Beamer's one of my favorite coaches, and I think the culture of Va Tech football is one that generally associated w/toughness (sans an LSU whipping they took a few years ago lol).

Talked to la'el a couple of weeks ago and he raved about how much of an upgrade grimes is over stud.
Felt he could've been in Greg Robinson's shoes (top pick in 3 years) had grimes been here to coach him 3 years

that's the only part i didn't agree with. If anything, our O-line always seemed to show up vs Bama.

They averaged over 200 last year when they had a good passing attack. Unless one of the young QBs steps up and asserts himself as a passing threat, LSU will NEED to rush for a lot more than 180 yds/game.
Not being a negatiger, I think they'll be just fine. I would not be shocked if they averaged over 220/game on the ground.

Especially when Buga averages 150 a game.

You know John Wayne, yes the actor, was a solid offensive lineman for USC in the day.
But to the topic at hand: Grimes is off to a great start, has been impressive on both the recruiting & coaching fronts.
He is a solid and well overdue improvement over Stud in all areas of coaching.
