Since the NCAA is changing kick off rules. Here is Greg Schiano proposal:

after a touchdown or field goal, the scoring team retains possession, getting the football on its own 30, facing fourth-and-15. The team either can go for it or punt it away. In effect, punts would replace kickoffs.

If you're going to set it up that way you have to make the likelihood of keeping the ball analogous to an onside kick. Seems like a 15-yard gain is too easy. Maybe 4th and 25.

What are the stats on 4th/15 vs onside kicks?

The onside kick is stupid and often the officials do not get it right!

It sounds dumb but it would be more entertaining than kickoffs.

Greg needs to stick to the basics, like reporting 100% of the child rape he witnesses. Oh wait...

So let me get third straight... the potential for a 14 play, 7 minute drive followed by, oh, say, an 11 minute, 6 minute drive is considered safer for the defense than a single kickoff for special teams?

Why not just punt instead of kick off?

Seems fairly bizarre to add all those wrinkles/sport redefining aspects

Just leave kickoffs alone. The players know the risks involved with the sport.

Really sad to see the once great sport of college football get ruined more and more with each passing season.

you do realize a team can retain possession after a score by recovering an onsides kick, which is also pretty dangerous. This proposal just tries to give the kicking team a chance to keep possession with a low-odds play, in place of the onsides kick.

I haven't thought it through enough, but my knee-jerk opinion is that it's not an awful alternative.

IMO, 4th and 15 is MUCH more likely to be successful than an onside kick.

the NCAA and NFL are scared of getting sued blind if they don't make changes to protect the players, now that we know about CTE. These changes are on the margins of the game, so I don't get too worried about them.
