For people that don't remember Roberts, he was better than Shaq, especially during their freshman year and on offense. Please read...

Ehhhhh. He wasn't as raw as Shaq when they both were freshman, but it was pretty clear from the get go as to who was actually going to turn out better, in the long run.

I guess it's a matter of perspective, but I wouldn't necessarily say he was "better" as a freshman.

He had such a freakish athleticism that took time to catch up to his size. Roberts was very smooth, even as a freshman, but you could see he had a ceiling as to what he'd be able to do.

Man those were the PMAC’s heydays. Filled to the brim with fans every game. People camping out and sleeping on the PMAC ramps before home games. They were the goon squad.

Those were the days for LSU basketball for sure. Dale Brown (love him or hate him) brought a ton of talent and energy to the program. This team should have won it all, but Dale never had the coaching acumen needed to get all the way to the top...

I remember him well but didn’t know the rest of the story. Enjoyed the article and his post playing life. Sounds like he has found peace and happiness.

Sucks to be forever linked with Shaq but this article makes me Love Shaq Unanimously even more.

Wow thanks for sharing, what a great article. Loved the part about shaq insisting on buying him a car. Had no idea Stanley still lived in a BR apartment.

It would be awesome for our new bball coach to invite Stanley to some practices and/or games.

Anyone know how to reach Matt McMahon??

Wonderful life story. He and Shaq were our version of the Twin Towers in the late 80s. Brings back great memories and recall of the frustration we didn’t o deep into the NCAA tournament with those two and a Chris Jackson. We were loaded with talent.

As a recruit or pro prospect, Roberts was never rated as high as Shaq. Shaq and Kenny Anderson were the best of that high school class a year below Roberts. Roberts was consensus top 10 his year, but Kenny Anderson and Shaq were already considered generational type players.

Here's another article that was in the sidebar for the OP article. Lots more of his backstory.

I went to plenty of games as a student in this era - Shaq had a higher ceiling and was a higher rated player, but as freshmen, Stanley was better offensively. Very polished in the post with a soft touch.

Good article.... I was buying a pair of shoes at the old Cortana and looked right behind me in the checkout and there stood Shaq and Stanley Roberts...Freshmen year. I am 6' 3" so I'm usually looking down on people in South La, but not that time.

Yep. LSU football sucked in those days, but basketball made up for it.

When my son graduated from LSU in 2012, Stanley Roberts also graduated in the same ceremony that was held in the Fieldhouse. Dale Brown was there to support Stanley. Stanley got a standing ovation from the graduates and the crowd. It was a nice moment.
