What is with this recent trend...I swear every other team we play does this now

I'm not sure about the others, but he was their Friday guy early in the season. I think he had some arm issues so he may have been bumped for extra rest, or ineffectiveness, somewhere along the way and it probably just stuck.

Florida isn't pitching their best guy on Thursday, FWIW.

PM said today that he was thinking about the regional, and who he would like to throw against the 4 seed in the 1st game. McCune came to mind, since he can throw strikes, and has the experience of being a Friday starter. In order for that to happen, he needs to stretch out McCune's innings, so that is why he started him against USC. Unfortunately, because of his ineffectiveness, he didn't get stretched out. Back to the drawing board...

He should have been trying to stretch someone out in these midweek games after Reynolds went down imo. We may need a 4th starter somewhere down the line, and we would really be in a jam if one of the weekend guys had to miss a start.

Really sucks we've had two quality arms go down for the season in Broussard to Tommy John and then Reynolds middle of the year. We could really use these guys as both have live arms in relief on the weekends.

True, but at some point you have to see what they can do in an extended situation against decent competition. Throwing 5 innings against McNeese or Southern doesn't tell me anything.

Good point, I'm just thinking more along the lines of having someone stretched out and ready to step in from an innings standpoint rather than a "find someone to beat Grambling" angle. If we get into a spot where a 4th starter is needed we already know the bullpen is going to be taxed. There really isn't anyone else that you could reasonably expect to give you 5 innings right now, even if they pitch well.

Glenn is obviously stretched out and I'm including him as one of the top 3 starters when I mention the possibility of needing a 4th if the situation arises. There is no guarantee on the others. What are McCune and Cotton's longest outings of the year (not that Cotton would be considered as a starter anyway)? Bonvillain hasn't been stretched since he was moved out of the Sunday job. Isn't his longest outing over the last couple of months only about 3+?

Again, I'm not saying we would have no hope of getting by in a pinch. I'm saying we wouldn't be able to handle it without either asking someone to perform in a role they haven't been asked to previously, without extending the bullpen and thereby affecting their availability the rest of the series/tournament, or both.

I see nothing wrong with this move.

The way these last three weekends set up Glenn could see himself in this role leading into regional play.

It's not about Nola's 3 straight CGs or the weather Thursday night. CPM did this last year. I'd venture to bet this is why we saw McCune start Sunday.

I like it, Glenn has been up and down, but much better at home. & having our 1/2 vs their 2/3 puts us at even more of an advantage.

He said he started McCune because he was hoping McCune would do well enough to be a regional game 1 starter.

It isn't going to work out that way unless Florida changes their mind about when Crawford is going to pitch. So yes, it is about the other things Mainieri mentioned.

Remember too that McCune was going to start the Sunday game at Alabama before the Saturday game went 16 innings. And at the time, a lot of people here were in favor of that.

We play thursday/friday/saturday series from here on out.

Get your head out Mainieri.

EDIT: Well I guess it makes sense with the weather issue.
