Ultimately, he probably got better and the competition got worse.
quote:I'm not arguing that he was "so" good as a freshman. But good enough to share the field with the likes of Boutte, Nabers, and BT. Did they progress to better players, definitely. And your target share break down would make sense for a natural fall in production. All that makes sense and alludes to a talented roster to where Bech is falling behind. Talentless? IDK. Again, not putting him on a pedestal over guys we had on roster. I know nothing of TCU, their depth, or what last year looked like for them in 2023 so I am not knowledgable enough to explain his 12 receptions. I'm not saying he should have played more or gotten more looks or had better production at LSU. All I'm saying is fans want to say, BK inherited a dumpster fire that had 39 players and void of talent. The cupboard was empty! BS!!! We had so much WR talent that one of the dudes had to leave and went on to become a Bilentkoff semifinalist.
You’re arguing he was so good as a freshmen but needed a year to learn TCU’s system as a JR?

didn't he tell us to judge him in year 3? Well we are 6-4 right now, out of the expanded playoff, and seemingly going in the opposite direction than previous years.
We will for the first time under BK not win 10 games, in the past two years we were 10-4 and 10-3.
Maybe his buyout is too big to fire him now but I'm not convinced a powerhouse like LSU is going in the right direction under BK.
edit: in the NIL and unlimited portal era, it shouldn't take more than 3 years to rebuild a team who won a national championship just under 5 years ago.

there were enormous gaps in talent at a lot of keep positions.
The only position on offense with any depth was WR.
When Kelly was hired we didn’t have didn’t have anyone at QB, RB, TE and we had huge holes across the OL. 5/11 starters on offense were not on the team in 2021.

Nuss was on roster. I know we have soured on him but he was on roster. But, I won't ever take away from BK getting Daniels here. Biggest win for BK during his tenure here.
We had John Emery and Josh Williams whom I am not a fan of but clearly a guy BK loves...to a fault. John Emery was huge in BK's only win over Bama.
Mason Taylor had committed to O and LSU prior to him being fired. He counts as BK's first recruiting class but O already had him on board. Coach O also already had commitments from Will Campbell and Emery Jones. Dillenger was also on roster and look what has happened since Dillenger went down. So three dudes in positions you mentioned BK is credited for because they were his first recruiting class but all three of those dudes told Coach O, not BK, they were ready to be Tigers. It was not a dumpster fire!

having an unsigned class doesn’t mean anything in transition. Kelly had to keep those kids on board.
Nuss was the 19th ranked QB out of HS which he was barely out of HS.
If kelly didn’t bring in a ton of transfers and hold together that class it was absolutely a dumpster fire.

So Coach O left a bunch of dudes that BK didn't have to recruit, just convince not leave equates to a dumpster fire?
And what ton of transfers has BK brought in outside of Daniels that has amounted to anything? Outside of Daniels, who has BK brought in that has surpassed the production left behind by O? How has BK in three years fixed the OL issue other than convincing the dumpster fire of recruits that O left (Campbell, E. Jones) to stay committed? How have we looked at OL after O's guy Dillenger has gone down? BK won the west with O's guys should be the narrative and now we are getting worse. O left a roster ready to make a run at the SEC which we did. Since then, we have gotten further from contending for the SEC.

We lost recruits when O got fired.
No one is a given, they weren’t on the team when O got here.
If you count McGlothrin who got kicked off the team, we had 3 scholarship Cbs still on the team when Kelly was hired. All 3 ended up transferring. None of them were drafted. 1 of them would have played if he wasn’t kicked off the team.
Kelly brought in JBC, Garner, Brooks, Foucha and Wingo.
1 starting DB was from
the 2021 teams. thats a disaster.
2 OL were on the 2021 team. That’s a disaster
we had 1 QB left and he was a Rs Freshmem. that was a disaster
and of the 40 something players who were on the roster, another 20 were gone the next year either because they sucked or were seniors/went to the NFL.
There were talented players but huge gaps at a ton of positions.

But we didn’t lose those recruits because O had already gotten them to fall in love with LSU.
1. So a generalized statement that O left a dumpster fire should be more specific to “O left a dumpster fire at DB!” Okay, agree with that. BK fixed that for a year. Kinda…those guys weren’t amazing. And it has been bad since. Have two top 5 recruits tho, I’ll give you the DB argument.
2. Coach O’s staff recognized the OLine would be trouble. So they had 2 highly recruited players in Campbell and Jones ready. So BK just executed O’s plan. But…Oline was never an issue until this year. So the Oline falls apart in year 3 and that is on O? Again, what has happened with the interior since O’s guy Dillinger went down? Oline is a problem BK created.
3. Max Johnson and Finley didn’t work out leaving the situation bleak…true. But O saw a bad QB situation and turned it into Joe Burrow and 2019. Left a disaster? IDK. A problem that BK fixed, props to him on that, but let’s not pretend going to the portal to grab a QB isn’t hard and what everyone is doing right now. Oregon and Ohio State, 1 and 2, both first year transfers. Consider it a dumpster fire in the portal era?!? No way! Again, won’t ever take away from BK getting Daniels there, huge win for him.
So, again, not a dumpster fire. Small isolated problem that should be fixed by year 3 and not used as an excuse.

The team sucks, no doubt. I truly do not know how long it takes to rebuild a roster nowadays. I don’t think any of us know what exactly goes on with recruiting now. It takes a lot of money, I know that much.

So, he’s made (2) horrendous coordinator hires. One on each side of the ball. That has Zero to do with the previous staff and the subsequent depletion of the roster. He’s about to be heading in to Year 4 with probably another new OC. Bottom line; he has made too many bad hires, undervaluing the portal, and seems to be continuing his career long model of building a program in today’s climate. All the while never winning a Championship and not even close.
That’s all on him and no one else. Full Stop!

Name a player that has developed to expectations under Kelly.

Nah. Year 10.
He needs a solid decade before we can tell if he’s the real deal.

We are roughly $30M into the Kelly regime/contract and what you see doesn’t inspire confidence in the future to this point.
To be fair, you could say this of any coach during their tenure.
Did you feel inspired that O could win a championship after his loss to Troy?
The reverse is true as well, we were all inspired and confident after 2019 but that didn't matter at all.

Here is the depth chart of holdover players in 2022
CB1: RayDariois Jones
CB2: Demarious McGhee
Safety: Jay Ward
Safety: Sage RyaSafety: Major Burns
LB1: Baskerville
LB2: Penn
DE Gaye
DT: Roy
DT Smith
Edge BJ Ojulari
Backups: CB none
Safety: none
DT: Guillory. so we would have none when smith blows out his knee.
DE: Jones
Edge: Little
LB: Jared Small I guess?
BJ, Roy andnWard were good players, but there was no debt, wholes at key positions and serious quality lacking.
Now we agree buyer 3 we would want to have better players one way or another.
