re: Giving up almost 300 yards in one half against a crap team?

Yeah, the biggest problems for me were a) the lack of a consistent pass rush from the defensive linemen and b) the disproportionate number of times we ran the ball up the gut for less than three yards. Combined with the soft zone, it shows that there won't be dramatic departures from last year, even though there is plenty of talent on both sides of the ball.

by this time we know what les wants
1. running up the middle, even if it's not working ant other things are
2. soft, conservative, zone defense

when was the last time we build on the first games and improved under les?
seriously? he has had 1 really unacceptable season under miles, which really didnt end that bad(last year)
im pretty sure he has won 10 games every other year.
and most times we open with some state school cupcake and win 55-0, its hard to improve from that.
or beat the shite out of VA Tech in the national title year? hard to get much better than that

when the option was working every single time... I'd like to see some more PA bootlegs as well. I've seen this from Crowton continually, though. Going for minimal repetition rather than sticking with what works. Run it to the outside and use our stud receivers to exploit their defensive backs until they prove it's not working anymore. Don't run a dive play 45 times and expect them to cave and not plug the middle all of a sudden. Especially when the o-line isn't offering much run protection.

just that I didn't see that some of the recurring problems in both scheme and fundamentals have been truly addressed.
i saw some changes in the 2nd half with our gameplan and overall play on both sides the ball
take out that final drive and it was a pretty solid effort in the 2nd half

the last drive pissed me off
our starters were in and they had NO pride. NO killer instinct.
they were happy to have the game wrapped up and they didn't give a frick what they did on the field

I was hoping we had put some scrubs in with the way they were moving it effortlessly. I was pretty disappointed to see them staring at their proverbial watches for the last 4 minutes.

it pissed me off because i bet the under...51.5, and that fricking broke me

All this talk about Chavis preaching aggressive defense is confusing. I wonder if the players are really just that clueless about what aggressive defense is.
Maybe it convinces Charles Alexander if Chavis likes to yell and make faces in practice, but the defense was pretty similar to what we saw from Mallveto last year, except Peterson and Nevis have definitely come along.

Does aggressive defense include playing 10-15 yards off of the wide receivers?

Yards are a not always a telling stat. Of course they outgained us, they ran 35 more plays on offense then us.
We outgained them nearly a yard more per play (6.69 to 5.76). If not for the bland 3rd down play-calling (i.e. if it were midseason against conference competition) they don't rack up nearly that many yards.
Besides, Ohio State outgained us.

playing DBs 10 yards off the line is not aggressive. neither is soft zones

I know, but look at what Charles Alexander said about the practices being run by Chavis in a manner simmilar to Saban, and all of the guys talking about intensity.
I guess intensity means playing half-assed at the end of the game and having wide-eyed smiles after a weak win, and aggressive defense means the coach yells a lot.

it doesn't matter what we practice if we run conservative shite in games
look at lafell's facebook status thread. he obviously thought we'd be running a different offense

I am wondering if players just delude themselves into believing what they want to, even when everything else suggests the opposite. Unfortunately, none of us will probably ever know.

Yeah I confused too, a couple of players look better but the overall defense looks the same or worse..

I think 2 things are at issue here, and a lot has to do with reaction to mistakes. We played aggressive early in the first drive with several blitzes. Hell, we blitzed the first play, and nearly got a sack with Coleman. Then Polk just kind of ran over us. for a couple of 1st downs basically hitting LSU in the mouth by breaking tackles.
Then on 3rd and 12, Chavis calls basically an all-out blitz and we get massively burned for 50+ yards. This then led to the TD and the team was shell shocked. I think Chavis and the players got hit in the mouth, were stunned and just didn't get their heads back into the game on defense until the 2nd half.
As for the offense, they just ran over the UW defense to start their opening drive and then got stone-walled at the goal line. Then Cutrera made a great play, and the defense just didn't take UW seriously thinking the first drive was a fluke.
UW then smacked em in the mouth again and they didn't know how to react.
I really think both the offense and defense expected a lot less fight out of UW and then the coaches tried to simplify things too much to try and get us back on track.
If anything, I was happy to see the fact that Chavis made great adjustments in the second half, which was a problem he had according to Tennessee fans.
LSU will be better.

I get your point, but the Troy game last year was much worse than this.
UW has talent on offense to match most teams out there. Troy doesn't.
