UGA is a better academic school overall
The criteria in which they rank schools is somewhat BS.......One of the factors has something to do with alumni donation. Another factor has something to do with rival schools' inputs. Besides, isn't 1+1 or X=z(45*7.5/3)*Y*84/6 the same at each school? Is the biggest factor on reputation alone? I mean Harvard, Yale, Stanford just gets a free ride one year to the next just because of who they are. Can someone provide a link on the criteria in which they come up with these rankings? I've seen it in the past but no longer have the link.

What makes Athens a great college town? I live there and I don't see it.

Best college town in America?

Better than Boston?

Maybe best college town that has nothing but a college there?

Nah, Charlottesville beats that.

Somebody's just a big REM and B-52's fan.

UGA is one of 2 schools ranked higher than LSU.

In order the 3 Tier One schools in the SEC are UF, UGA and LSU.

As one with degrees from BOTH schools I saw the biggest difference in the way the schools were operated. At LSU rules were something to beat students up with. At UGA rules were something to modify if it helped a student.

why even read what GG says? The dude is retarded and produces nothing worth reading. He just wants attention bc he is an attention whore. If you ignore him then eventually he will have to actually write something worth a shite or he will prove the point that he isn't capable of anything but shite stirring.

fwiw i think he looks like a drag queen

What? That's not even close to being accurate. Vanderbilt is the highest ranked SEC school followed by UF, UGA, Alabama, Auburn, S. Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and THEN LSU. The only SEC schools that LSU ranks ahead of are Ole Miss and Miss. St.

You got MBA backwards LSU is at #49 and I don't know what UGA is but i'm guessing you got them backwards LINK

Nope didn't get them backwards. If you read that article correctly, you will see that LSU is ranked 49th among PUBLIC business programs. There are quite a few good private business programs. So again, here are the correct rankings for business and law:

US News overall rank UGA #58 LSU #130
US News undergraduate business rank UGA #33 LSU #80
US News MBA programs UGA #49 LSU #62
US News law schools UGA #32 LSU #88
Business Week undergrad UGA #44 LSU #90

As far as salaries go, the US News only posts salaries for MBA grads and law school grads but here's the breakdown:

MBA avg starting salary UGA $76,517 LSU $63,921
Law grad avg starting salary UGA $100,000 LSU $65,000

Business Week does provide some undergraduate business salary stats. UGA's average is $44,000 to start out and LSU's is $45,000. The big difference in Business Week's ranking (what caused UGA to rank so much higher than LSU) was that UGA got an A in job placement and facilities and a B in teaching quality whereas LSU received a B and 2 C's in those categories. Being near Atlanta obviously helped UGA a lot as 722 companies actively recruit UGA undergrads whereas 211 recruit at LSU.
The thing that I noticed is that most of the undergraduate business schools start out around the same. The big difference is once you start getting into graduate programs.

Dirty little secret about the mighty UGA academic 'reputation.' Its inflated.

Anyone who lives in Ga and has a B avg. can go to UGA for FREE on a Hope Scholarship. This leads to grade inflation, which artifically boosts GPA avgs.

Ga 2006 population: 9.3 million
La 2006 population 4.2 million

UGA student body size 25k
LSU student body size 23k

You do the math, UGA is "harder to get into" because more people "want" to go there and they can be more selective.

I have several friends who have kids at UGA and they are disappointed in the academics b/c the profs are still the same country bumpkins as they were 20 years ago.

You want a good education? Go to Ga Tech. or Vandy, UVA, Duke, Wash & Lee, Tulane, etc.

You want a good education + real football? Go to any SEC school (save Vandy).

I have been to athens and it is very impressive as a college town. Unlike BR the entire town basically revolves around the University. that is not to say anything bad about br

I would not say Georgia is a better school that LSU. I think that would revolve around which college or department you were talking about. Ga would top some and LSU would top others.

I have had the opportunity to spend time on both campuses, and they are just different. There are things about LSU's campus that I really like (the lake, the parade ground, it's flat so it's easier to get around) and there are things about UGA's campus that I really like (North Campus, Sanford Stadium being in the smack dab middle of the campus, downtown being next door).
How's that for a diplomatic answer?

not among the university administrators that i've talked to. they don't use that publication when evaluating the relative strengths of universities for various reasons.

In his blog today GG, who's niece attends Georgia says Georgia is a better school than LSU. Harder to get into and better dorms. Athens, he says, is the best college town in America.

I don't see how any of this is debatable.

But if you were going to major in engineering, construction management, or perhaps something in wildlife then LSU would be your bet.

Engineering or construction management, yes. Landscape architecture as well. LSU has one of the nest LA programs in the country.

Forestry or wildlife - no. UGA is better.

I went to both schools as an undergraduate - as far as better "college town" it is Athens, hands down. I did not perceive any noticeable difference between quality of education. They're both large state schools.

Anyone who can appreciate that night life/music does not stop and start with going to fred's, reggie's, tigerbar, and bogie's will admit that athens has a better scene than baton rouge, and athens offers a lot more in the way of scenery, weather, outdoors activities, etc than baton rouge. If you are only rating their campuses, it is more a matter of preference because both are very nice in their own way.

LSU likely has higher starting salaries due to their engineering programs, esp petroleum engineering...so not a valid argument.

If you like being over crowded and being forced to take shuttles to classes b/c their campus is so spread out, then yes.

It is better academically, not really debatable.

Athens blows IMO.

How do the measure the "overall academics" of a school?

I majored in engineering at LSU and I work with a shitload of other engineers. I've met engineers from all over creation, but I've never met an engineer from UGA.

So if I want to be an engineer, is UGA a "better school", or is LSU a "better school"?

The state of GA has only 1 ABET university, GaTech. UGA an GT have a coorperative agreement for UGA to send students there for engineering degrees.

that is why you have never met a UGA engineering grad.

The problem with statements such as "UGA is a better school than LSU" is that they are so simplistic that they say more about the speaker than the subject of his comment. Is UGA higher rated overall? Sure. By some. If you're interested in studying, for example, petroleum engineering, is UGA better? Not likely. How about agribusiness, again, not likely. Veterinary science. Again, not so much. The point is that any large state university can provide as good an education as you can get if you look for it, and if you choose the school with a view to what your interest is. My daughter seriously considered going to UGA, until she decided that the social atmosphere was juvenile. There are pluses and minuses to every school, even Yale or Stanford. So, again, making statements such as GG's is an indictment of the person who engages his mouth without having his brain in gear.
