Here's how it works.....Athletics gives the band department/school of music ($100.00), then Damon Talley/Dean of the school of music decides to spend ($60.00).....result: the LSU School of Music then spends ($40.00) on ANYTHING they want in the School of Music (not stuff for Tiger Band). Does everyone finally get what's going on here? Athletics is powerless to do anything about it because the upper administration has "mandated" those funds go to the School of Music each year (for distribution to the "Tiger Band"). The administration knows the School of Music does NOT return unused funds back to athletics (thus padding the School of Music's budget). This results in the LSU administration allocating fewer funds to the School of Music because of the "unused" Tiger Band funds. THIS IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO THE TIGER BAND.

The solution is simple here. Move Tiger Band back under the control of the athletics department. That's how it used to be before Damon Talley and the School of Music got their claws into them. Designate the marching band as a spirit organization like the cheerleaders and Tiger Girls. Those groups fall under the umbrella of the athletics department. I'm sure that the SOM would fight this tooth and nail, as Tiger Band is their cash cow, despite the fact that Talley and his cronies despise Tiger Band. If Scott Woodward could get the backing of President Tate then it could happen.

Die hard LSU fan and TGBFTL. But I would remiss if I didn’t point out that USC’s band is one of the best bands in the country. I just hope they/it/the outcome of the game doesn’t ruin that Fleetwood Mac song they are in.

I do hope we bring out full band.

Can concur. Thornton School of Music is one of the best in the world in literally every single department. Almost every teacher there is a renowned legend in their field. I went for my masters (jazz). Thankfully no one in the music department gives a shite about football so my LSU shite talking never posed much of a problem.

Awesome that you were in TGBFTL. Really awesome. What instrument if you don’t mind me asking? After I graduated USC I honestly thought about going back to LSU for a year strictly to be in the band, sounds like a dumb idea (which it probably was) but I had wanted to do that since I was a kid.

The FULL GBFTL should absolutely positively be at the BIGGEST SEC AWAY GAME every season.

Abolutely posirively NO REASON that it shouldn't!

I agree with this.

How do we make it happen?

Taking the 55 member band to Wisconsin was a disgrace

The real disgrace was the antiquated 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense that LM promised to change in the offseason

I doubt this will happen....School of Music + Upper Administration VS Woodward = Woodward losses.

Not so sure about that....
Politics favor athletics.
The band is part of the pageantry that attracts fans that generates the money, so the money should stay within AD.
However, the school of music knows the La. Legislature will never adequately fund higher ed, so it will lose out in the shuffle of money at the appropriations level.
The result will be that the School of Music will decline, but that's a consequence of it inadequately considering the hand that feeds it.

Why would the upper administration automatically side with the SOM? The band wasn't always under the control of the SOM. In fact, you could argue that it began its decline as soon as Damon Talley got his hands on them. They never did do a nationwide search for an experienced director after Frank Wickes retired and LInda Moorehouse left. They just kept promoting from within.

As much money as football generates band travel expense is drop in the bucket

So how much money do you donate to the band department each year? Cause it doesn't grow on trees, and education funds (specifically the arts, ie. music) are one of the first things cut when it comes to budget cuts. Can't use bands from other states as a counter argument either as defunding education/the arts has always been a Louisiana thing.

I'm sorry if my first couple of sentences here seem blunt or disrespectful, but as someone who was in college band and currently a high school Assistant Band Director, I know many who think travel to away athletic events is covered by athletic budget. I can assure you that, most of the time, it is not.

Other schools with much bigger bands do it. Why can't LSU?

See my other reply. All of the Louisiana schools (except perhaps Southern and Grambling who have huge alumni bases who donate money) go to about 1 away game a year (sometimes not even that).

Louisiana education/the arts funding sucks, and, for the most part, bands have to fund their own travel.

Athletics is funding everything related to Tiger Band.

If this is indeed the case, then I'm wrong and I apologize. I'll say this tho. If it is indeed the case, LSU is the exception and not the rule.

Settle down.

My point is that it should be based on money that it generates.

Very True!!!

Why would the upper administration automatically side with the SOM?

Because the "academic" types (the SOM & Administration) are the elites. The athletic department is considered uneducated morons and as such, are not smart enough to be in their "club." Also, remember that the rest of the university spends all day and all night, 24/7, dreaming up ways to get their hands on the athletic department's money!
