Chapman put up a couple of 104 mph pitches in relief. Had a 103 mph slider.

Skenes needs to get thru 6. He might need a 110 pitch count.

He’s second best on the pirates right now.

Which is not a slight on Skenes.

Since his callup on May 11th, he ranks 32nd in WAR according to FanGraphs (behind Nola at 26).

Once he's allowed to go longer in games and eat innings, he'll shoot up the rankings quickly.

Top 5 pitcher in the MLB means you're a Cy Young type arm that season. He's not there yet.

But he's got insane potential to be that, even in year 2.

I'd hope so considering he was the #1 pick and hyped as much as Strasburg, who was considered one of the greatest pitching prospect.

When people K against you your pitch count will rise

His strike to pitch ratio is good. He can’t make the hitters make contact

For example mlb average is 62% of pitches thrown are strikes. Over 65% is considered very good

Skenes sits at 67% of pitches thrown are strikes. There isn’t a way for him to be more efficient unless your suggestion is he throw easier so people can hit him

Zach Wheeler
Corbin Burnes

Luis Gil
Shota Imanga

This isn’t even including guys like Valdez, Snell, Cole, Bieber, Nola, Strider, Glasnow, Fried, & Lopez from Minny.

You realize calling pitches with a 7-0 lead is a little different than doing so in a close game?

right now teams seem to be fouling him off a ton. Which is probably the strategy. just get a piece of it and wear him down.

Can't really help it if guys are fouling them off.

He threw alot of fastballs yesterday, which was probably the main cause of that. As others pointed out, if he starts mixing in some offspeed pitches more, those pitch counts probably come down.

But he had faced 7 batters through 2 innings. He threw 33 pitches; 19 of those to 3 batters. I believe he struck out 2 of them, but those 3 guys probably fouled off half a dozen pitches.

I don't disagree, but now that LSU's season is over, I'm starting to consume a little more MLB content. Lots of talk of the balls being deader this year. Mostly anecdotal, though. If there's data to support it, I haven't seen it.

Not taking away from the number of good pitchers, although the game has changed so much that it's helped lower starter's non-counting stats. They're only asked to go 6 or 7 max usually and 2 or 3 times through the lineup. Part of that is because there's so many good back end bullpen guys. Just about everybody who trots out of the pen from the 7th inning on throws 97+. It's crazy. Hell, just about every good college teams has back end guys running it up there 95+. Insane how much it's changed.

Game has certainly changed, pitchers aren't asked to throw 120+ pitches and go 9 innings anymore. A pitcher who can get into the 7th with around 100 pitchers and a sub 3.00 ERA is an ace. Now spin rates are all the rage, along with the data that is tracked.

However, saying Skenes is a top 5 already is just LSU fans being biased. He is having a great start to his pro league, yet you have other rookie pitchers who are performing as well. Not to mention the tons of other young ppl there and former unknowns who are currently dominating.

Can Skenes be considered a top 5? Well yeah if he pitches like this all year but after 5 starts it's all just premature.

Time will reveal that - I wouldn't say you could say that just yet with this small of a samples size and teams adjusting as is always the case.

But the sheer stuff gives him that opportunity.
