re: For Those Who are Convinced Les Calls the Plays

Sometimes, I wish Les just eats his grass.

not sure if that is true, but I AM SURE THAT BEFORE HE WAS HIRED, MILES DICTATED THE TERMS..
they both come pout of the same college style

The head coach has no offensive philosophy. He has unbelievably hired the last three OC's who all have the same 8 plays from the same formations. It's shocking

You don't think when the other team is punting Les doesn't chat with the OC about what he expects out of the play selection?
So, call the plays? No. Tell the OC what he would like to see, YES?

I find it hilarious the selective memory of this place.

You don't need a great memory to recall three or four plays.
j/k

Here is my reasoning:
We have had three different coordinators from 3 extremely different coaching styles, yet we have seen the same exact formations and playcalls from all 3 of them. That just seems very interesting or coincidental
Not true:
Jimbo offensive formations: Pro Style bases, Shotgun up tempo, horizontal spread of the field. Common example of differences with other offenses: Bubble screens to stretch the field horizontally.
Crowton offensive formations: Multiple bases, Spread uptempo, also horizontal spread of the field. Common examples of differences with other offenses: Changes to strange formations and line protection schemes in the middle of drives, such as the use of the pistol formation.
Cam offense formations: Pro Style bases, Spread and Shotgun up tempo, vertical spreading of the field. Common examples of differences with other offenses: Emphasis on deeper routes and throwing the ball more to the FB. (If Cam ever gets the TEs ready, also more TE usage than previous OCs.)
Now, the Stud/Krags offense is similar to Cam's, so we have had a similar offense ever since Crowton left. But Krags philosophies just happen to be similar to Cams.

Cam calls the plays. Les tells Cam what he'd like to see. Les can overrule.

What makes you think this,
That incessant Read Option play that he has been trying to run since he got here. It's a play that rarely pans out and more times than not just starts a drive in the hole. The Miles offensive identity tends to be predictably sad, and has been that way since before Cameron.

Now I know some of y'all aren't paying attention. Feel free to link any time that Flynn or Ryan P ran the read option. Heck, Jefferson was an athletic QB starting on and off for four years and the number of times they tried it with him would probably be less than 15.

I think Les tells Cam to keep it conservative and not air it out. We run the same plays over and over year to year with different offensive coordinators. I know we have 2 young qb's so we won't see a Mett type of offense but I would like to see more formations and variations. I also think we run the same play back to back way too often.

Cam's career at Baltimore Ravens.
Year % rush plays % pass plays
2008 56% 44%
2009 48% 52%
2010 47% 53%
2011 45% 55%

How do you explain 2 1,000 yard WRs last year? Les had his best statistical RB ever last year, and yet we still threw the ball plenty. We could have easily rode Hill for another 50 carries last year. Hill was more consistent than our passing game was, and that is no big knock on the passing game.

If Cam called 4 rushes into the center of a very good defensive front center from the 3 yard line, then he should be fired immediately. That's got egotistical les written all over it.

well it makes sense, actually.
Some of us have eyes.
Not to mention look at Cam's past teams and how he has OC'd them.

Easy to remember 2 plays even for Les.

A few days ago there was a post that included parts of an interview with Mike Gundy and Josh Henson where they came out and said that most of their attempts to get Miles to make changes to the offense at OSU fell on deaf ears. One of them said something to the effect that if the play didn't include 1 WR, 2TE, and the I formation, then Miles wasn't interested.
Here it is, if anyone is interested in reading it.

What makes you think this, other than the plays themselves?
He never has a playsheet (that I've seen), yet Cam does. Does he just have fantastic memory? Hard to come to the conclusion he's actually calling the plays if you watch him.
I don't think people think Les literally calls all of the plays, but like others have pointed out, he has his hands all over the playcalling and it isn't even questionable.
He's had 4 different OC's (5 if you count Kragthorpe) and the offense has continued to look the same. The fact is that Les wants to do what Les wants to do and he dictates his OCs to call plays for the most part that fit that style.
Think about the fact that all three best offensive years since 2006 (Jimbo leaving) have come on the first years of the respective coordinators and senior QBs. Once they youngsters come into play at QB, Les forces this pathetic and archaic scheme.
In the end, LSU's offense sucks without a Senior QB since 2007.

People should look at Les Miles' record as OC at OSU to see how he is as an offensive coach:
1995 - 111 ypg passing (101 out of 108)
1996 - 167 ypg passing (best year, but couldn't find ranking. #50 had 210+ ypg so it couldn't have been very good)
1997 - 137 ypg passing (nice, he average out, lol)
In the end, the guy was never a good OC when it comes to passing, and it shows in his insistence on hanging on to what he did nearly 20 years ago. If you can't tell he's the problem, then I don't know what to say.
Also, when you continue to replace position coaches that are at least mediocre/slightly above average to great with "great" recruiters that are mediocre to bad at coaching, then you get our OL this year.
