re: For all the Non-LSU Grads. How did you become a fan?

For me started while was knee high to a grasshopper. My dad listened to every game on the radio and I just wanted to be close to my Dad at the time. Then I was blessed to play in Tiger Stadium during my Jr High years. Playing in front of maybe 30k - 40k fans wearing Purple and Gold was great. Once you have played on that field you never will be a fan of another college. The best part was when I scored a td in the North end zone. I not able to keep my grades up at LSU so I had to leave. My question, to the person who believes you can only be a Tiger fan if you have a degree from LSU, is what about all those LSU football players who never got a degree but actually put their sweat and blood on the line for LSU are they not allowed to be LSU Tiger fans?

Just start watching the games and cheer when the Tigers score. Then the next day when you see people say, "how 'bout dem Tigas?"

I have grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings who are at or have gone to LSU.
All of my family is from the BR/Nola/Laffy/Lake Charles area. I was born in Louisiana.
I grew up watching and rooting for LSU football/baseball/basketball. I also grew up thinking I was going to attend LSU, but out of state tuition being what it is, I decided to stay in Texas.
But according to some people, I'm just a t-shirt fan because I never attended school there.
BS.
These schools are funded by every Louisiana citizen through taxes, and many of the fans you see all around Tiger Stadium are not alums either.

I came to NOLA for Mardi Gras in my senior year of college. Met a pretty LSU girl. Fell in love, carried on a long distance romance, and moved down here after graduation. She consented to marry me. I fell in love with LSU too.

the people who say you have to be a LSU graduate to be a fan, did they just become fans when they started going to LSU?

For the most part, yes. UT and TAMU are filled with arrogant bastards who do the same thing.
"Never really watched (insert school here) sports, but I went there for college, so they're my team. You're just a T-shirt fan."
"WTF, you never went to school there, why are you a fan?"
BS from stupid kids.

Like so many others, I also was "born" into the deal. My dad was a La sportswriter, and as long as I can remember I have been a fan, even more so after my 1st game watching Bert Jones at QB. I did the same to my kids, and now they plan on attending LSU after graduation.

been going to lsu games since i was 5(parents had season tickets). they would also take me to basketball and baseball games on a regular basis. i grew up running the campus on saturdays during the fall and spring which is the reason i bleed purple and gold. i got my degree from ULM though. love both

I'm from Louisiana and have always loved the LSU. I dont remember the specific moment I became a fan, but it had more to do with Chris Jackson led basketball team first, and then onto football. I didnt attend a game at LSU until the game against Alabama in '06.
Circumstances being what they were for me, I had to attend school at the Univ of Tennessee. when the two play I always pull for the Tigers, but am then disappointed it had to be at the expense of the Vols. it was definitely extra sweet for me watching LSU knock off then #1 UF from my dorm room in Knoxville. good times.

Raised up going and loving LSU. LSU doesnt have every major, and what I wanted to do happens to be one of them not available there.

My uncle was starting center there in mid-50's. When I came along my family still listened to every game on the radio. Since I can remember I have loved LSU. It goes much deeper than just football, I love the university, I love the culture, and I love being around all my fellow Tiger fans; I dont care where you came from or why you support the Tigers. Did I go to school there? No I did not, but it is my state university and I am proud of it! Geaux Tigers!!

You can pick a school for academic reasons and become a fan of its football team (Forced to watch football and eventually become a fan)
You grew up rooting for a school without any academic ties and eventually become a student (or not).
Nothing wrong with either scenario! I don't understand why the fanhood needs to be questioned!
Oh btw, I went to school during the Dinardo days! I could have used a few more wins

My whole family went to lsu. I got a D2 football scholarship. Free ride. No brainer. Been an lsu fan since birth. Anybody who has a problem with non lsu grads being fans is self righteous punk.

Must suck for a kid to grow up in a house full of LSU fans, and then not be fully allowed to be a fan until he hits the age to attend college. Better yet, he would have to stop being a fan if he does not go to college.
I also know some female Saints fans at work. I haven't really checked, but I'm sure this criteria removes them from being able to actually be Saints fans.

See my post in TigerRads thread about this same thing.
One thing that makes it easier is that most people who didn't go to LSU could have gone, it may be rhe flagship of Louisiana but it isn't exactly an academic powerhouse. For example, I think it would be much more difficult cheering for a team like Stanford if I was not a grad because chances are I would not get admitted if I applied.

I didnt get a full ride bc I fricked off in high school too much. Started at Nicholls with all intentions of transferring after 2 years to finish in Mech Eng. Got caught up in partying too much and never made it. Graduated with a BS in math. Worked a couple years and decided I wanted to finish getting that Eng degree I started out for. But I decided to go into Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Which brought me to UNO, only about 4 programs in the US with the concentration of Naval Architecture.
So I've had 2 chances to be a student/graduate of LSU. I dont regret either choice. I honestly dont think I would have graduated the first time if I would have gone to LSU, just wasnt mature enough to stay out the bars. The second wasnt an option for my degree.
I've been to more LSU games/tailgates, baseball and football, than both of my alma maters combined.

I have been a fan since Burt Jones threw a last second TD pass to Brad Davis to beat Ol Miss in 1972, and my dad drove off of the road in his excitement!! I have been a fan ever since and have represented LSU around the entire world with 21 years of Army experience.
Some of my sons first spoken words were "eellssuuu roorrr" (LSU roar, growling like a tiger) as he pointed to the LSU sweatshirt that I would wear while pushing him on the swing. That son is now a Junior at LSU, and prominently represents me in the student section at each home game, and some away games.
I send a great deal of money to LSU each semester in order for my son to graduate from there.
I'd say that these two examples, as well as many more, qualify me to be a fan of LSU, even though I didn't graduate from there!
