One of the best memories I have of me and my father at the game. After the game we went back to the hotel and my father woke up in the middle of the night and yelled out "4th and 1 Ara! Go for it again"

Yes was a favorite game of mine; skipped attending ELP play the N.O. Warehouse that night and watch with dad on TV, we were astounded how great Tigers were that night. BTW, Coach Mac beat Bama 69 & 70 I think only coach at that time to back to back wins over Bear. I believe the 7-14 game was maybe 72? Was a Thanksgiving Night I believe?

First LSU game I saw after being discharged from the Marine Corps two months earlier and still getting used to civilian life.

What I most clearly recall were the defensive stops on 4th and goal keeping Notre Dame out of the end zone. An electrifying game one of the best ever I've watched LSU play.

I was back home safe, enjoying the holidays with my soon to be bride and this game was icing on the cake. A great homecoming event in a sense. Seems like yesterday.

LSU beat Alabama at home 20-15 in '69, again beating them at Birmingham 14-9 in '70. In '71, it was the first year Alabama installed the wishbone, returning to LSU and winning 14-7 on a national televised night game but Casanova did not play. It would take LSU 10 years to beat Alabama 20-10 in '82, with Hilliard & Risher.

I think you are correct. I was at the '71 Bama game (just a starry eyed kid) but didn't know that Casanova didn't play that game.

LSU looked small against Notre Dame, but they were tough and sure tacklers.

Also, Jones looked like an elite NFL QB. LSU had trouble running against Notre Dame but Jones threw the ball all over the field.

Also, I had forgotten that Ronnie Estay was also the punter. When is the last time a DT was a team's punter?

I was not aware of this. I’m definitely gonna be asking him about it as he is my neighbor.

in '73, the game was nationally televised on Thanksgiving night, both were undefeated. McClendon alternated quarterbacks back then, to the chagrin of most fans. After Miley's first series, Broussard was sent in deep in our own territory, then tossed by ball behind the runner, Alabama recovered leading to their first score. Any chance to win that game was lost right then. Miley was a great talent that was wasted, he would not return for his senior year opting to play for the California Angels.

That was nice.

Depressing to think those cheerleaders are now in their late 60s/early 70s now.

Estay was a beast. Warren Capone had a huge pic. Those goal line stands were EPIC! The size differential was insane. Those GLStands were right there with Billy Cannon, Warren Rabb, and company.

They were saying the average weight for the ND defensive line was 245 lbs.

That's a linebacker in today's game.

Off-putting they put ND in one of the end zones. I am pretty sure the domers didn't do that for LSU the previous year.

I got Mike Miley to autograph my baseball glove at the "Baseball Clinic" at Pete Goldsby field.

Hard to overstate how much him leaving early impacted our football fortunes and Coach Mac's career.

Have never heard of another DT being thr punter. However, John Adams, who played DE, also was our punter around '79.

I was listening to it on the radio on WWL. John Ferguson was the best. A lot has changed.

A lot changed? Hell yes. Lol.

One thing jumped out at me: the offensive line was disciplined, it got down into set position in unison and fired off the ball quickly and low with leverage. Such technique seems to be lost today.

I believe that "LSU TIGERS" was painted in end zone at South Bend for the 1970 game. It was a small display (probably 1 x 5 yards in white with purple letters). The other end zone repped Notre Dame in a similar style with their colors as I recall. I think there was a move to have the visiting team represented in the paint schemes back then. Notre Dame had a very minimalist style in field decoration in comparison to the colorful ways displayed at LSU.
