Florida State football: Duquesne game not a mirage for these Seminole running backs

OK fine, you don’t want to take much stock in the Duquesne game.
That is understandable. The Dukes are an FCS team. They were 42-point underdogs. They had one FBS win in program history. And the average person probably would not even know where the school is located.
But what if you knew that, per Pro Football Focus, Florida State forced 34 missed tackles?

Running backs Lawrance Toafili (13 carries, 101 yards, one TD), Ward (14 carries, 127 yards, two TDs) and Benson (11 carries, 105 yards, one TD) each eclipsed the 100-yard mark and paced FSU to 406 rushing yards in its 47-7 thrashing of Duquesne on Saturday.

Yeah that's like me saying look at all the missed tackles I forced against my 4 year old.

Their running backs are legit. It’ll be a good test for our tackling, specifically the LBs, early on.

I could do that against a peewee team, does that make impressive?

After watching the game, I believe that it was a combination of very poor tackling and Fla St running backs being talented. Just how much of each will be learned this Sunday.

I do worry about our tackling a bit tbh. Doesnt seem like we are hitting as much this camp (which is great) but brings into question tackling in game 1 vs a team who has already played.

Thats impressive but a dozen of those were at or behind the LOS. The backs looked great, the oline left much to be desired.

I would say, "are you serious"

Yeah, I’m not sure this stat invalidates the fact that Duquesne sucks. I know they have talented backs, but I’m not sold by this one cherry picked statistic in a largely inconsequential cupcake game. We’ll see how they do this week.

I would still say "so fricking what?"

This. I know they are good backs but that team should rename themselves Arm Tackle U. They blew up a fair amount of plays that were gains due to poor tackling.

I do think their RBs are pretty good but that oline will be eaten alive

This game will be a great test of defensive fundamentals for our team. If we come out tackle well, cover well, and dominate the LOS then we’re in good shape to be +8 wins.

Why is this great?

The FSU RB that I'm most worried about is Trey Benson. The other two backs were quick and agile, but small and unimposing. Benson gave them a change of pace to where they could run up the middle and tacklers bounced off of him. Like other posters have stated, the level of competition would have any typical power 5 FBS player looking like a stud. That being said, I hope that when we make contact with them in the backfield, we drop them right then. If they can break an initial tackle and get into open space, could be a long game.

Yep.. reminded me of charbonnet last year with UCLA

Less injuries, less wear and tear, etc. CLM had them in pads 4x week once the regular season starts and it sounds like CBK is taking a much different approach.

I hope that their plan is to beat us by running the ball

Have these people actually looked at the DL and LBs Duquesne put on the field Saturday?
No doubt the FSU RBs are talented but you can hardly take anything away from that game. The defense they were running through is simply no where near indicative of what they will see any other week this season.
