Not saying Iranian backed, but was probably Iranian backed.
I could see them activating an asset and that plane was planned for Iran.

The co-pilot allegedly forced the aircraft into a dive after attacking the captain, before passengers and crew (including undercover special forces) regained control.

Doubt anyone has watched it, but the show Tehran is pseudo based on this type of event.
Israelis aren't allowed to travel to Saudi Arabia so they fake a plane issue to divert to Iran. A spy gets off the plane and there are some Israeli's regulars accidentally caught up in Iran.
So go full conspiracy theory and see this as a Mossad op to get Israelis into Saudi Arabia.

Doors can be overridden from the outside with a code.
Pilots can also prevent this override by a switch in the cockpit.
So the stabbed pilot likely kept the button from being pushed or was able to switch it back to normal/unlock position.
