Have you never played baseball?
You restring and pull the strings tight, over time they get longer. Pitchers mess with their gloves more than most for whatever reason in my experience
ETA: also they aren’t constantly fielding grounders or fly balls so no real reason to cut the strings

Ben McDonald explained it once and said as much. He said some of the guys have theirs extra long just cuz.

Teams I played on guys constantly tugged at their strings. Infielders would pull them tight and cut the strings, outfielders and pitchers would let them grow. Pitchers definitely wanted the long strings for whatever reason.
