Is he an upgrade from Chavis or no? What say ye?

Upgrade? I hate to say it but Chavis and A&M likely finish with a higher rated D than us this year. Let that sink in.

The most polite thing I can say, not a good question at all...
We could have taken a risk on a great mid major DC before this...

I'm not saying we're all of a sudden going to have a defense that reflects the quality of our current offense, but he's not an upgrade.

Not even close. I'll never forget watching Clemson get 70 hung on them, and thinking that was the worst defensive performance I had ever witnessed. I'm just shocked at this hire.

It doesn't appear that way. Chavis was a proven D-coordinator in the SEC even with the 3rd down issues. I'm sure Steele is a better recruiter because Chavis had no personality, but LSU gets recruits pretty easy anyway. The guy is spectacular however at getting hired at winning programs and coaching for legendary coaches though (and I'm not calling Les legendary for those about to pounce). Saban, Bowden, Majors, Osborne...

I guess the question is why did he get hired by all of those guys? He was terrible as a head coach at Baylor, but I guess he is one of those guys that does a lot of other "stuff" well.

His history strongly suggests that he'll put together defenses that opposing offenses won't HAVE to mount scoring drives on in the final minutes.

Why the frick are you comparing him to Chavis? Chavis CHOSE to leave so anything is an upgrade over that POS.
This guy has a pretty strong track record and has influence in this Division.
He WANTS to be here.
His D in TigerLand will knock the spit out of the Aggies.
I'm in.

He could be viewing this as a chance at redemption. Lets hope he has learned from his mistakes. I am done melting.

I was thinking the same thing. Why did all those guys hire him.... Organizational skills

If he blitzes and keeps teams from doing 2 minutes drills in crucial games then yes.

Think about this....
AU Malzhan - Muschamp
Bama Saban - Smart
A&M Sumlin - Chavis
LSU Miles - Steele
Really ? This is gonna be our best case scenario for the near future...4th in SEC West...

It's incredible how many ranters know so much more than all of the coaches who make a living at the profession. I just can't quite figure out how this cast of know-it-alls didn't get a call asking them to take the job (or at least make the decision on who should get it). I hope all of you negative Nellies are as successful in your real-time jobs as you would be in coaching.

You are right. We won't have to worry about giving up last minute game winning drives. With our lousy offense, coupled with a crappy defense, we won't be in those games at the end.
