Everybody knows that Alex is not pronounced “alec” right?

I know the history and what not. But since his family messed up the pronunciation, why are we still using the wrong way to say it?

proper names are proper names. you can spell it Alex and pronounce it dumptruck, that is how proper names work.

I know that’s how people pronounce it. I’m asking why nobody realizes that they’re wrong when they do so.

But I thought maybe it originated with Hawthorne and something he misheard.

It looks like the family said “we called him Alec!!” and so they started using it. So because the family screwed it up, they had to honor it lol

There was a thread on here a few years ago that called that statement into question. Something like Hawthorne asked about pronouncing it "Alec" and a relative that never knew Alex said something like "I guess, that's fine."
