Heard from a very reliable source that Etling is going to get back surgery after the spring game.

He played the whole season with a herniated disc in his back (reported before the Wisconsin game) LINK

and it affected his mechanics and arm strength throughout the year.

Why wouldn't he have gotten the surgery as soon as last season ended?

Wonder if he has tried a decompression table before opting to go for something like back surgery which is basically a coin toss. Had two herniated disc and 2 weeks on a decompression table 3x a week and chiropractic adjustments had me pain free

Lol I'm just giving you my actual real life experience with a herniated disk! You should see the before and after MRI's.

Probably waited to see if rest and therapy would work before committing to surgery. It looks like wasted time, but back surgery can get complicated.

Worried about a position battle in the spring with a new OC, I suppose.

He was able to play through it so why not use the spring to learn the offense. surgery heal up over the summer and then be ready to go in the fall? makes perfect sense.

That seems a bit wreckless to play with that kind of injury.

Sounds painful. Wish him a successful surgery and speedy recovery if this is true.

The surgery he's likely needing is outpatient. It takes about an hour and a half with a two or three stitch incision.

I had it in my lower back in 2001 at age 39. Took about two months to get to 100 percent. Being young and in shape he should need less time. He'll be fine.

I have very few issues even today.

This would explain some accuracy issues.

Agreed. It seemed like at the beginning of games, he would be overthrowing deep receivers, and by the end of the game, he was throwing behind the receiver. This makes sense as to why his arm strength seemed to fade in big games.
