ESPN’s SEC Power Rankings

7. LSU
“If we're handing out superlatives and "wild card" is already taken, then maybe we ought to call LSU the biggest question mark in the SEC. Really, what are we to make of the Tigers? The offense, despite the addition of quarterback Joe Burrow, doesn't appear poised to break out of what feels like a decadelong slump. And while the defense has two legitimate stars in Greedy Williams and Devin White, it will have to replace half of its starters from last season, including fixtures Arden Key and Christian LaCouture. The talent is always there in Baton Rouge, but maybe not the expectations this season.”

What if the starters being replaced weren't that good?

We have to replace Key and Lacoture?
Cancel the season.
Cancel the season.

Only questions are on offense and one corner spot on D. The biggest question is can Ensminger call a good enough game to beat a very good defense. The talent is there.

No one is going have us at the top of their rankings. Period. No one is going take a chance on a team with that many question marks. (You are very biased if you don't think we have a lot of question marks.) We just have to let it play out on the field. The media would rather be wrong about putting a team too low rather than too high.

Don't forget Donnie Alexander

Key who missed almost half the season and in several games wasn't even close to himself and LaCouture who didn't even get drafted...that seems tough

1) It has been a decade-long slump. 2) You said it was a question mark but don't really seem to have any question about it.
You don't know any more than anyone else, which is why we're rightfully so preseason middle of the pack. But don't blame a replenished DL, linebacking corpse for the ages, and respectable-depth, talented secondary as a reason for the question mark. The defense under Aranda will be fine--spew the normal lines everyone else already knows verbatim about how the offense has the talent but not the experience to be able to accurately gauge us pre-season.

Replacing a clearly unmotivated Key and a guy who was really just a decent, but not great DL, doesn't seem to be that tall of a task.
I can live with LSU being ranked 7th to start. There are significant question marks. But Florida at 5? Mullen seems to be a sound coach, but for all of the adulation he received at MSU, he only had ONE winning SEC record in 9 years. Their overall record was generally propped up by playing an awful OOC schedule every year. In fact, in 9 years they only played 2 OOC opponents who were ranked at the time of the game (and lost both). A significant chunk of his SEC wins came vs. Kentucky and Ole Miss. He would pick off some other SEC teams in "down" years, but other than 2014, his resume isn't overly spectacular.
He now takes over a Florida team that wen 4-7 last season and has significant questions at the QB spot. He also has a journeyman DC in Todd Grantham.
Yes, Mullen absolutely deserves the benefit of the doubt over Ogeron. But would you rather have Grantham over Aranda? Would you rather be coaching a program that went 9-3 the previous season vs. 4-7?
Sorry. I'm just not there

All this replacing players is complete nonsense. Every college team replaces its roster. These publications or idiots refuse to accept the fact 100% of major CFB rosters are filled with 17-21 year old young men. Notice I referred to them as "young men". It comes down to coaching and development. Year in and year out, the top programs in the country lose players to graduation or NFL early draft entries. Look up the top teams and read who the HC is. Saban loses a coordinator seemingly each offseason, and they never lose a beat. C.U.M. does@ OSU, along with USC and OU. Nobody will ever convince me that Alabama has superior talent ,ie more than LSU. Saban goes out and gets coordinators who can relate with the young men. Plus he lets his guys do their job. Downvote me all you want, but its the truth. Ask yourself this question. Location aside, would you play for O instead of Lincoln Riley or Jimbo? Lsu is and will be a 8 win team at best including a lousy bowl. Tell me im wrong.

like a lot of people, they will be eating crow, and not a crow gumbo

This what I was thinking. Ed Alexander is clearly better than Gilmore. According to Aranda Fehoko is one of the best dl on the team. Taylor and Phillips were even if not better Donnie Alexander last year. I think Vincent can be as good as Donte. Thorton and Divinity both had good showings against Notre Dame. The only real question in my opinion is Chaisson, and if can he produce the way Arden Key did in his sophomore season.
