Correction. They "BUILT" a stadium in his name. Slight difference.

First off, guys - creepy. Posted at the same time, too.

Second:

Make up your minds, dudes? Is he Walt or is he Clyde?

And you mean, this guy, right?

Now, I know he gets all the "Just for Men" he wants for free, but he's 70. Basketball is clearly better for your longevity than football.

true dat! dude would have went berserker lobbing up 3's wheneber he crossed halfcourt with where the college 3 line was much like in the manner of Steph Curry.

I hate all that white/black bullshite. Will the world ever get pass something as juvenile as the color of someones skin. But Walt "Clyde" Frazier was just known as the quintessential PG back then in his time. I didn't hear anything back then about him supposed to be a great defensive stopper or some shite, so I don't know where you are getting that erroneous arse info from. Frazier was Jason Kidd in his time.

Maravich averaged ~44 PPG through college. 11 of those came from free throws, so 33 points from the field. to get that 44 to 57, he would have to make 13 3 pointers a game. This means he would be making 3.5 2 pointers compared to 13 3 pointers on average. in an era when there was no 3 point line to make that an advantage I can't believe he actually took that many more shots of 3 point distance compared to 2 point distance.

Lets compare that to Steph Curry this season who is having the greatest 3 point season in NBA history. he takes 10.7 3s per game compared to 8.9 2s. and thats with the benefit of there actually being an extra point for making them.

this stat is just complete bullshite made up by dale brown.

I've got a bad feeling this is about to turn into another Steph/Pistol comparison thread

There is no comparison. I don't know that there's been a better shooter than Maravich. Ball handling was lights out too.

No comparison! Curry's a better shooter! Pistol could shoot, but was more of a streak shooter. Curry is a pure shooter. shite, I'd say Action Jackson was a better shooter than Pistol and closer to Curry.

57 ppg is BS. That dale brown shot chart quote is BS. The math doesn't work out. He averaged 44ppg. Subtract the 11 ppg that were from the free throw line. So, he averaged 33 ppg from 2-pointers. (16.5 made shots per game.). Like the previous poster said, 13 of those 16.5 made shots per game would have been from behind the arc. Check it.
I love Pistol - read both of the biographies that came out about him a few years ago. I have watched the YouTube video of him giving his Christian testimony in Phoenix, about a year before he died. So, I am not saying that he could not have scored all those points, but in this case the math does not work out.

I grew up when Pistol Pete was at LSU. Dude would get hot and it was amazing. Best ball handler other than a Globetrotter I've every seen, bar none. As for him making 57 if there was a three point line. Maybe. The numbers don't really add up, but I figure he would have come back a foot or two to make some of those shots three's so it could have been close. My guesstimation is he would have been over 50 for certain. What a shame he died so young.... Best college player in history, imho. Have a great day..

I bet that number would probably have gone up if there were 30 second shot clocks. He would have had more possessions with the ball

I have not seen the shot chart, so I can't comment on its accuracy. However 44 points per game with no 3 point line is amazing. Even with a 3 point line, has any other player (college or pro) come close to that average? Was Pete the best shooter ever? I don't know-- but no question he was the best college scorer of all time!

As long as we are playing the what if game, Maravich would have been a one and done player. So he would have set the single season scoring record, but not the career record.

Pete scored at will in the NBA. He hit nearly 70 points with Walt Frazier and Earl Monroe trying in vain to stop him.
