I read this article last night and thought, this sounds like the 2020 LSU Tigers... Granted, there are many factors that led to FSU's decline that we don't have to worry about at LSU (lack of funding or willingness to do what is necessary to win in big time college football, or a more shallow donor base), but the words about athletes not playing up to their potential, being called out by former players, loyalty of the HC to the coordinators, off field issues overshadowing the play on the field, HC divorce.... sounds eerily familiar...

LINK

quote:

"That 2014 team was more talented than the 2013 team," former FSU fullback Freddie Stevenson said. "But a lot of guys' minds weren't in the same place."

Said another member of the 2013 title team: "I took it for granted, winning a national championship. I was like, 'We did it once, we can do it again. It's going to be easy.'"

No one will argue that the 2020 team is "more talented" than the 2019 team, but the sentiment is the same...

quote:

Stevenson said altercations were common between veterans of FSU's best years and younger players who lacked the focus and drive to win at a high level, and he worried what would become of the team after those veterans left.

"We were banking on the success of the past," said one former player. "Everybody lost their way. It was almost like we expected to be good because we were at Florida State."

quote:

"A lot of guys who were supposed to step up never lived up to who they were supposed to be. I even put myself under that," said Chad Mavety, a prized juco prospect on the offensive line whose career was marred by injuries. "It's tough to rely on guys who aren't showing up and doing what they're supposed to do."

quote:

That same year, Fisher and wife, Candi, separated with the highly publicized divorce finalized in January 2016.

"You don't have all the energy, all the focus of what you can put into coaching us when you have that going on, turmoil at the house," one former player said.

Sound familiar??

I know we have a good YOUNG team, and the future is bright! I just hope we can get it turned around and not suffer the same fate of FSU....

The article was all about how the university refused to support the football team financially and they fell behind Clemson and kept falling. How Jimbo ignored all the red flag character issues of his players and let them run wild. They expected Willie T. to perform miracles in a job that he wasn't qualified for.

NONE OF THAT APPLIES TO LSU. There is total financial support for the football team and O has placed character as a high priority kicking bad people off the team. FSU's situation is more aligned to LSU in the Late 80's early 90's. A lot of good ole boy interference with the program and an unwillingness to spend any money on facilities.

But it’s not.

That’s 2015 still had Winston on it.

There is no comparison.

ONLY $9 Million/year for Orgeron too. And Pelini more $$ than Venables.
Would almost be a joke if the situation was not so sad.

This happens when you don’t have true Leaders on the team! Coaches demand it, but unless you have players holding others accountable, you won’t have a true buy in to that Standard.

I hate bringing up A1, but it’s needed. Going into the 2009 season, A1 was in the middle of offseason workouts, many younger players were joking around and not focused on lifting weights. Julio jones got done with a set, put the weights down and walked over to the younger guys. Open hand slapped one guy and said this is business and we don’t fk around in here. Saban said that set the tone not only for the 09 season but for the program.

Until you have true leaders holding players accountable, it’ll be an issue.

I was thinking the same thing reading this article....we dont have the same problem with resources and recruiting esp at QB but can totally believe some defensive players are coasting this year and there is totally a lack of trust with the coaching staff

Did it mention Covid or starting qb getting hurt or 15 starters leaving or no spring practice?
So no it doesn’t sound familiar!

Nothing at FSU come close to LSU. LSU has won National Championships since 1908. LSU has won 3 and played for 4 National Championships since 2000. LSU has won more National championships this century than any school not named Alabama.

FSU has only had 1 coach that won consistently since 1950 when the girls school let the boys come and play. Jimbo had 1 or 2 years of top quality football before he left.

It's not a vision of the future: It's a description of the past.

Many of the issues at the heart of the FSU situation were true of 1987 to 1999 LSU:
1) Visionary leader let go because he gets under the skin of BOS (in our case, it was an AD, Bob Broadhead.)
2) Coaches on a merry-go-round.
3) Serious deficiencies in facilities.
4) Incumbent AD focuses on costs, not benefits. (Ours was even worse, as evidenced by losing the easiest Title IX lawsuit in history.)

Not to say it can't happen again here, but the only way to fix it at FSU will be to have a strong-headed coach to come in and get the support we ended up giving Saban.

Someone posted this in the MSB thread:

FSU High School QB Signees, 2013-19
2013 John Franklin (transferred)

2014 JJ Cosentino (never started, left program with 1 year eligibility remaining)

2015 Deondre Francois (dismissed) and De'Andre Johnson (dismissed)

2016 Malik Henry (dismissed)

2017 Bailey Hockman (transferred) and James Blackman (transferred)

2018 None

2019 None

If you look at LSU's high school QB signees from 2010-2016, we had a similar, if not worse 7-year stretch:

2010: Zach Lee (never stepped foot on campus; pro baseball)

2011: Jerrard Randall (transferred) and Stephen Rivers (transferred)

2012: none

2013: Hayden Rettig (transferred) and Anthony Jennings (started, then benched, then transferred)

2014: Brandon Harris (started, then benched, then transferred)

2015: Justin McMillan (transferred)

2016: Lindsey Scott (transferred)

ETA: Point is, any team can recover.

This team is a mess of it's own creation.
Bad coaching hires. Lack of confidence in the coaches/scheme. Lack of leadership. Lack of effort. A head coach who didn't pay attention to details, particularly in regard to the changes caused by the pandemic. Accepting the "young team" excuses for playing like dog crap. (actually an insult to dog crap)
Lack of player development and perhaps some misevaluations of talent.

Some of it yes, but what really frustrated Jimbo was FSU admin not approving his demands. That wouldn't be a problem here
