You can do whatever you want in this great country.
Freedom of speech and expression.
But be prepared for what your actions may result in, and don't be shortsighted.
Bingo.
Pro football is a business and while Reid is free to have whatever opinion he chooses, he's not free to do so without any potential consequences. Those consequences being people may not want to employ him.
The bottom line is his talent isn't good enough to force owners to look past his behavior. Otherwise teams would be knocking down his door with significant offers. NFL teams can find another safety that comes with less hassle.

quote:Nah. It isnt because you protested systematic oppression (nobody is for this at a macro level). It is because you did so in a way in which it brought negative light on the league, and you continued to do so when it was known it brought negative light to the league.
not because of my skill set but because I’ve protested systemic oppression,
Which if that is more important to you power on. But you need to understand if you bring negative light to your employer, you become more unemployable to them

The responses in this thread are jaw dropping.

Everything you choose to do has consequences. Congratulations to all the kneelers on what they have earned. It certainly hasn't changed anyone's mentality or actions when it comes to police violence against anyone.

I hope he enjoyed kneeling for our national anthem.

Eric you just don't get it do you?

That’s horseshite. If someone has to choose between playing football and making a statement, then there is a systemic problem.
And stop comparing the NFL to your shitty cubicle job.
Now, I think Eric is wrong about this. The safety market has been slow, I think only Marcus Gilchrist is the only FA safety to sign, once they start then the market value for Reid will be set.

Reid has a right to protest. And Reid may be right about systemic oppression.
However, if he is right, he also knows that his "oppressors" don't view it that way and that they are numerous and powerful.
He should not be surprised that expressing his view, no matter how meritorious, could have adverse consequences for his marketability.
Succinctly, he can be right, or he can be popular. Regrettably, not both.

You can make a statement and play football.
The issue is here, costing the team money(distractions)/making the team money(winning)
Reid is a net negative as of right now to teams

Well, try to explain yourself. Or don't, I don't really care. Your post was laughable.

quote:The real truth is, they could have found so many ways to protest that wouldnt make people angry. Choosing to protest an issue, by kneeling for the anthem, is so sophomoric it is insane. You immediately turn people off from even hearing your message. Even people that would have agreed with you.

I said Eric is wrong about this. The more likely scenario is the slow safety free agency market
Now, if he NEVER plays again, that’s a different story.

The whole thing was stupid stunt. They thought they would piss of a minority of viewers but that it would earn them kudos from the media and their "fans." Much like the media right now, they were out of touch, and instead of recognizing this and dropping the clown show they doubled down. They were dumb, plain and simple.

Marshawn Lynch sat for national anthem with no statement. He wasn't villified. Its a mob reaction, not about a frigging flag.
