how many colleges have won more national titles?
Bama has like 114 National Championships. No one comes close, nor will they ever come close.

I think they are a elite program now. Saban will have them clicking

funny thing is i keep hearing they have a top 3 program. yeah they are ranked in the top 3 this year but lsu, uf, and uga all have been the better program the past decade. Not to mention you have to throw in osu, ut, usc, and ou before you can even mention bama.
and to the saban lovers, we were not considered elite until after he left.

Sorry, I just don't get where a year and a half makes a team elite.....10-2 and lost their last 2 games...THE very 2 games that would have caused them to possibly be called "elite"--and they LOST them....Now, we're only part of the way through the year. Can we at least wait until the year is up to see if they even make the SEC championship game....or even win a bowl game...or even finished ranked in the top 10?

Nicely done. +1000

firefighter, do you know them?

Everything's relative but I personally consider 'Bama one of the top 5 programs of all time and is once again perennially a championship contender. So by my own personal standard the Tide is an elite program. Florida UGA and LSU are currently in that class. TN and Auburn have all elite programs that are temporarily sub-elite but due to bounce back shortly IMHO. My view is suffering through a losing season drops you form Elite to Good until you prove that was just an abberation. 'Bama under Saban has climbed back into elite status. UGA may actually fall off the elite plateau if they don't right the ship pretty quick. My two cents.

I follow your thinking somewhat, and they may be like ships passing in different directions, but you do know that at least Ga. has actually won an SEC title lately.

Bama currently has ZERO wins in BCS bowls and their last bowl victory was the Indepence Bowl.

It's like that if Egypt of today was sitting on on the second or third largest miliaries in the world and the nuclear bomb. They havn't done anyting in a while but they sure as shite look like they're ready to blow.

lsu82bill, isnt that what this site is for? I am stating my opinion and i really dont care if u agree or not.
Well then maybe you just don't understand the meaning of the word "elite". There are plenty of schools that haven't won championships in the last few years that most college football experts would consider, within the context of historical record, prestige, great former players, top facilities, the abiity to attract top recruits, the willingness of bowl committees to extend an invitation, the willingness of TV networks to put that school on national TV....to be "elite" programs. If you thinks schools like Boise State and Oregon and Oklahoma State are "elite" schools because or recent success and schools like Alabama, Notre Dame, Michigan, Florida State are not....so be it.

Army is and elite program, as is Minnesota.

Meh, you got Nicky, you're elite.

quote:I consider them an elite program who's coach had the integrity to kick his troubled star quarterback off the team in the same season that he lost his defensive coordinator and had to roll the dice with co-coordinators from the existing staff because it was too late (after we played in and won the BCS championship game btw) to hire the kind of coordinator he wanted long term.
What do you consider LSU after 8-5 last yr?
So I ask you - What do you consider LSU after 8-5 last yr?

No, b/c unlike Egypt, Bama was 12-2 last year, undeafeted so far this year, has a great coach, and has been recruiting lights out.
Yet, Bama still only has one bowl victory in the past two years and it was a close one. Finished 7-6 that year.
Yet, the remarkable run last year produced no SEC titles, no crystal balls and not even a BCS bowl victory play a non-BCS conference team.
We are all trying to agree upon a definition of elite team. If a college team has not won a couple of conference titles, been in 1-2 BCS championship games, nor won a couple of upper tier bowl games over the past ten years, then I say you are not elite. A team might have a storied history in college football but not an elite team of today.
Is Bama close this year, yes. Just about as close as they were last year.

Bama has been down for about a decade, but it's back to being an elite program now. We don't have to deny it. We just need to beat the shite out of them.
This. Bama has the facilities, boosters, fan base, coaching and talent. Championships may make a team “Elite” but you cannot deny that they are a top tier program.

if your definition of elite is championships then there are only a very few in all of college football. do you think lsu has been an elite program? until saban took over they were a middle of the pack team in the west so by your definition they have been an elite program for what 6 or 7 years?

What is saban's record versus ULM?
